I've got a tach, boost, and pyro. Are there any other gauges that would be usefull in my quest for the big numbers?

I know lots of gauges are just a distraction, so I just want to get the gauges I need.

I don't tow heavy trailers much. It's mostly just a daily driver/hotrod.

Well... ... . if you're after big numbers then you'll need... ... .

One pyrometer for every cylinder

Drive pressure gauge for the manifold and another in between the two turbos

Another boost gauge for the big turbo

Pressure gauges for the water injection system

Temp gauges for front/rear diffs, trans and transfer case

Engine oil temp gauge

Fuel supply pressure gauge

There's likely a few others too :-laf ;) :D

Heh I'd put in a knot meter just in case you wana put pontoons! lol I dunno wat other guages, I dunno how they work but you no how those vehicles can tell you how many mpg your gettin? THAT my friend would be cool... .

Heck CB, why not just hook up a laptop (computer)?

Then you can monitor everything formula mentioned... ... . and include a gps mapping system, underhood camera, ir camera facing aft (to see what's behind the 'haze'), and I'll stop there because my mind is drifting into the gutter.....

Yeah, I had to remind the kid the other day what the back seat area is for. :-laf

No, but seriously though... is there any other important gauges to get?

Please also explain the importance and use of the gauge.

BS detect 'O meter

Nice one Pastor!!!:-laf :-laf

There has been talk about the merits (or non merits) of a temp gage for the Getrag..... probably worth it if you are towing a lot.

Also a real oil pressure gage, one with actual numbers, would be a good idea. If I add one I think it will be from a T off the turbo feed line.

Fuel press might be worth doing.

And I always liked those outside air temp gages.

Jay

I would really like an outside temp gauge... they're handy warning signals for icy conditions.

I think fuel pressure and oil temp would be two ones to get... possible a generic temp gauge with three probes on a switch so I can check front or rear diff, and transmission.

Any other good ones?

CB,

I got an air temp gauge from Westach for exactly that reason -- and it's been great. It matches my other westach gauges and it's much easier to read than those little cheap-o digital readouts you get for $10-15.

Mounted the probe under the fender where its protected by the wheel well liner.

Enjoy!!

Does anyone know what the use is of an oil temp gauge? What are the normal temps?

Would monitoring my transmission/t-case/diffs be of any use if I don't haul much? (except for ass :D of course... )

I am not sure as to where I am to post my question. Please give me some instructions if this is not the right spot.

This is my question:

I want to purchase a travel trailer with a dry hitch weight of 1000lbs. and gross vechile weight of 11,700 lbs.

Will my 03 2500 long bed 48RE 4. 10 pull this ok?

What gauges should I consider having installed if I plan to travel in the mountains out west?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

HenryH. .

You need to be in the 3rd gen forum.

This is the 1st gen forum... aka geriatric forum , aka Pastor Bob's choir, for all the pre-94 model truck owners.

Oil and water

CB -

In my humble opinion, even though the factory dash has gauges for oil pressure and water temp... ... . I like to know the actual numbers. The difference in oil pressure on a hi-mile engine of between 20 psi hot at idle and 10 psi hot at idle may not register well enough on the stock gauge and you wouldn't know it anyway, but I sure want to know about it. The only way to know is to have some numbers and that's why every car I have has gauges for the basic vital organs. I monitor everything because I can, and it is very reassuring to look at the oil and water to see that while cruising the oil pressure is 44 psi hot and 170* on the water temp. Towing they are slightly higher, but you'll just never know how low or high they are without the numbers.

... ..... plus... . gauges are cool.....

Good idea on the gauges, Sam. My gauge always read lower than the other 5 turcks I'd had, and with the 6. 9 oil pump crapping out on me last summer, I got a little nervous. Bought an oil presure gauge, hooked it up to the 1/8" NPT hole in the top of the oil filter housing, and cold idle was 50psi, cold full throtle was around 90, and warm idle was 30psi. So, high mileage engines can be jsut fine, if they havent been abused too much.

Your question may get better exposure in the towing, hauling & RV forum. Those guys know the in/out of trailers/towing. Welcome to the TDR!

PS CB_Parker just made the jump from 1st Gen to the 2002 & his comfort zone is still with us 1st Genners.
