I heard that the flywheel in 05 and 06 rams are not any good and dont last long. Is this true? My truck is at the mechanic shop getting a south bend clutch installed and he called me today saying that my stock flywheel is shot? My truck has 24,000 miles on it. Do you think he is going to keep mine and resell it and hand me one with high mileage on it? What do you guys think?

Well I don't know about the quality of the flywheels but you have the right to get all your replaced parts back. So if you are worried about that I would do one of two things. Take the flywheel to another shop and have it checked. Or if you want a new flywheel with the clutch Which may not be a bad idea. I would make them give you your old one back

I am getting all my stock parts back but im thinking that he is going to keep my flywheel and give me one laying around in the shop. also a new flywheel from south bend is going in the truck.

i just cant see a truck with 24,000 miles on it having a bad flywheel? maybe im wrong. just wanted to see what you guys thought.

dump the dmf and get the southbend one piece flywheel! hes doing you a favor.

yes the one piece flywheel is getting installed. just thinking hes keeping my dual mass flywheel cause its pretty much new and giving me one thats got high mileage. i want to get back all stock clutch parts and dual mass flywheel and sell them. he called me today telling me that the dual mass flywheel is bad. just cant see that at 24,000 miles on it.

the dual mass flywheel is junk. you wouldnt want it in there anyway. the shop has to be putting in a flywheel for the g56 or it wont work and the only way to get one of those is to get a new one through southbend. i doubt you will be gitting a used flywheel.

I wouldn't worry about it. I replaced mine myself at about 30,000 miles, and the flywheel surface was very purple/blue from being too hot.

I doubt he could sell your stock DMF for hardly anything, unless he's a pretty good salesman.

In fact, if you'd like my old one, you can have it for free + shipping. I figured with scrap metal price being $6/100 lbs, i'll just haul it in with my next load and figure I was getting a pretty good price!

Some of these trucks have what is called a DMF, this is a multi piece flywheel with springs and plastic parts in it... . the heat from the engine shortens the life of the plastic parts, especially if you've slipped the clutch with added power and gotten the flywheel hotter than normal... there are several manufactures of solid flywheels on the market. . unless the disc is designed to function behind a solid flywheel you will have additional transmission noise and later if the disc is really not designed right, input shaft wear and shortened transmission life... .

The DMF is ther to reduce torsional vibration at certain RPM ranges for more customer appeal and drive ability... .

Jim,

I am glad you explained the "DMF"

I wasn't quite sure if that was a part or a name for someone. :)
