Am I Reading This Right?

Was reading about the '05 Super Duty in Diesel Power mag and came across this:



"Another improvement over last year's model is the 250,000-mile service life rating of the new 6. 0L-with proper maintenance, of course. "



So your telling me the engine is only supposed to be good for 250,000 if you take care of it the correctly? Is this a joke???? Or should I say what a joke...



Then again I guess that is good enough for those who just lease them and don't know much about diesels. Don't get me wrong, Ford makes a good truck, and out of the box the PS is okay, too bad it's track record isn't as good.



250,000 miles I just about fell off the crapper.

Hey Scott... Cummins B-series is rated at 300,000 miles service under normal/moderate use. That's only 50,000 more. We know you will get MORE than that of course, much more... those ratings are like saying it WILL make it there, and more than likely MORE.

Is the 300,000 for the Cummins a Chrysler "thing" like the 100,000 warranty was?

Scott, 300,000 i believe is Cummins rating for the engine. And yes, it's "kind" of like the 100k thing with Dodge. . The truck is ok, needs more power. .

Although I would bet on there being more Cummins with 250,000+, the 7. 3 like you said is common when taken care of, with some more even being over 300,000 like the one I saw at a the Flying J about a month ago. I would almost pay money (but don't hold me to it) to see a 6. 0 with over 250,000 that hasn't been touched other than a water pump or something minor like that.

My brother works for UPR here in Texas. They run Dodge vans to pick up engineers and take them back to the yard from a dead-head. These vans have gas 360s and he said he notices 450,000 is typical. My last truck, (Dodge 360) had almost 130,000 on the clock and the engine still had stock compression and burned no oil. I dont think this is specific to Dodge though. If you take care of an engine, they way they are built these days, I don't see why they wont last a good while. It is very uncomon (for me anyway), to hear about a warranty repair on an engine, except for design issues such as GM piston slap, etc.



Most vehicles that are well maintained will develop other problems that make them not road-worthy or viable for repair before the engine goes. There is an exception to every rule however. My neighbor runs a lawn mowing and fenceing business. He's had 3 engines in the same chevy truck. All of them with more than 300k on them.

Scott: yup, Buda was fun. I used to work with a guy hot shotting that 675,000 on his 99' PSD only a bad injector and new trans, ALL stock. I've seen numerous gas motors get 300k + miles on them with the proper maintentance. Chevy 350's are by far the best gas engine, i'd even put them up against the Toyota 22R motor as far as longevity!

actually the duramax and powerstroke are rated for 250,000 and the cummins is rated for 350,000 before rebuild. there was a article explaining that in the last truck trend. truck trend stated that standing next to a duramax and powerstroke at idle sounded like quarters in a washer machine while standing next to a ctd sounded like half dollars
