When my '02 6-Speed is idling, the transmission sounds like there's some marbles rattling around in it. I'm pretty sure it's the trans as when I step on the clutch the sound goes away. Could it be low on fluid? :{

Also, there's this sticker on the PTO cover. There's not a TEXACO dealer for what, 1000 miles? Oo.

Trans Fluid

Stranger, I have a 02 with 6spd you can use penzoil syncromesh oil in you transmission, Autozone has it. I just change mine @70,000 but I got oil from dealer, its not like you change it that often.

Stranger, I'm a newbie to the site, and not much of a transmission guy, but to me it sounds like the fingers on the clutch plate are hanging up. How many miles, do you pull hard? On the subject of low on oil, do you see signs of leaks? I feel your pain . Dealer has mine tore out, synchro problems apparently indicitive to the nv5600.

Thanks guys.

RAJohnson: Previously I posted about the truck taking off by itself and one of the responses back was about the throwout bearing. I've ordered a master cylinder/slave kit. Am I going to be able to install that w/o taking the trans off? i. e. is there a "Fork" like I'm used to?

Gitten-R-Done: Thanks for the info about Pennzoil. That's the best news I've gotten since moving from Manteca 2-1/2 months ago.

GCordey: So, you're first post had to be bad news, eh? ;) . 42K miles, mostly towing. My hot rod is a '96 auto.

Maybe I should pull the trans even if I don't have to? Just to look at things.

Thanks again guys.

Stranger I don't think the truck will take off by itself as a result of the throw out bearing, but rather the Master or slave cylinder going bad would do that. Yes you can replace either or both of them with out removing the transmission, on the other hand to replace the throw out bearing the transmission as to be removed.

OK, take the PTO cover off and drain the fluid and clean the magnet inside, I use Redline oil, I use MT 90 in my 5-speed, and will put the MTL in the 5600 once I get time to bolt it in. At that mileage it shouldn't need changing, but it can't hurt anything. As far as the noise concern, it could be the throwout bearing, but I doubt it. These things are notorious for bad pilot bearings, but then again I just put a new clutch in mine, and the old bearing was fine(85K) Change the oil and see what happens :D

If the truck is moving on it's own, it's the pilot bearing. If you had that, and now grinding, I'd suggest pulling the trans. You'll probably find the Pilot bearing is shot.

The pilot bearing is not freewheeling when you disenguage the clutch causing the input shaft to continue to spin with the crankshaft.
