Who has trouble getting stock steel wheels to fit over the rear axle?

I know they are hub centered wheels, but every wheel I bought from a boneyard from a D or W250, AND the ones I just bought from Jimmy Appelgate's 92 I have to do a quick dremel job to get them to fit on to the axle.

Oh yes, I could tap them on, but then I'd never get them off.

I'm talking only a couple of thousandths... but none the less I have to go around a few times with the dremel before they will slide in place.

Just put one on tonight... so it's fresh in my mind.

Thanks for listening... I feel better now.

Is it the axle flange or the hub that it wont fit on? If it just wont go over the flange, maybe take a bit off of it instead. Just a thought.

not alone

jay,

i believe i have experienced the same thing. a friend and i swapped wheels and tires one day and it was touch and go to get my rear wheels onto his rear end. they must have been slightly out of round (the wheel centers, that is).

i have read on other posts that the factory wheels are relatively weak. i have relegated mine to winter duty with dedicated studded snows and will be purchasing an alternative for the summer.

cheers,

roy

I completely forgot about the factory wheels being junk. I had Ford wheels on my old truck, and they got switched to my dads 93. I have seen the factory wheels get bent by a tire machine. They are way flimsy, switch to the Firestone or Accuride wheels off of a Ford and don't look back.

It's the entire hub that it won't fit over.

Funny, but the 5 rims that came on the truck ALL fit fine and they did not look (to me) like they were tweaked to make them fit.

And all the other rims I have bought needed some help. Strange. Maybe Dan or GL are right??

Jay,

I have the same problem as you do. Mine do fit, but they are a tight fit over the hub. The same rims will fit on my brothers 92 easy. I have found the hole for the hub on Ford rims to be slightly larger and are easier to put on.

I've noticed this as well with my stock steely's. My truck when I bought it came with alum. rims so I purchased a set of 4 steel wheels from a 92 for winter time use. I sanded down the rear hubs primered and painted them only to find out it made it tight as all get out. As it scraped off most of the paint on the hub,I relized I wasted my time trying to make the truck look nicer.
