Towing heavy fiver to much on rear?

I pull with a 99 2500 5. 9 w/47RE 2nd transmission dodge dealer said

My gross weight of 18440 was asking to much from the unit?

What are Your thoughts?

Are you stock? If so, then the you're heavy, but (IMHO) the stock transmission is barely adequate for even a stock truck. Toss in some power mods, and pull that heavy and your headed for a third transmission. I would reccomend upgrading the TC at the very least, if not go the whole DTT thing.

Heavy

Harry, as long as you stay stock you should have no problems with that weight. Mine grosses at 19,500 and I have over 83,000 miles. bg

My O1 is a stick and we often have 18 - 20 K on the trailer plus the weight of the truck.....

We have an EZ kit on the engine and watch the transmission temp... . under 140 degrees empty, up to 200 degrees loaded..... with synethic transmission oil.....

My BIL with a 99 or 00 with an auto pulls also... . he has installed an extra cooler for the transmission as he was always over 275 degrees... . often up to 325.....

If your not watching your transmission temp your asking for problems... . my BIL couldn't pull his trailer with the stock set up... . he felt he was going to buy a transmission..... with the addition of the cooler, he finds he never gets over about 250 degrees...

The life of the oil and its property to do its work falls off when the oil temperature exceeds about 250... ...

Best of luck...

We all agree that the stock auto is less than marginal at best. If you tow in od then you will have transmission failures. Not enough precise info available.

The 99 2500 4x4 auto is rated at gvwr 8,800#

354 max trl wt 9,800# cgvwr 16,000#

410 max trl wt 11,800# cgvwr 18,000#

99 2500 2x4 auto is rated at gvwr 8,800#

354 max trl wt 10,200# cgvwr 16,000#

410 max trl wt 12,200# cgvwr 18,000#

You did not say wether you had a 4x4 or 2x4 or which axle ratio

precise Information is imperitive for informed or correct responses !!!!!!!

The diff in ratings is based on the added stress on the transmission with the 354 gear.

Harry... ... ... See my sig... . I am liscensed (CDL) for 36,000lbs... . Bought the truck in Nov. 01 with 87,000 miles on it. My truck and trailer alone weigh 16k. Yes, most of the time I am overweight for manufacture specs. I weighed in at 35k the other day on a 150 mile trip. But like the guys said... . your asking for trouble if you tow heavy in OD. I take my time and cruise at 60mph running about 2500 rpm. These trannies(stock) love rpm's.
