At 22K miles, I decided to make the switch to synthetic motor oil. I reset the overhead MPG meter and was amazed to see the number dancing between 19 and 20, even over 21 for a while, on a 100% freeway drive, unladen. Surely an anomaly! Well, into the second full tank, the overhead has settled to about 17 mpg in my usual mix of local freeway/stop and go city driving. This is a full 1. 5 MPG, approaching 2. 0 MPG improvement! 15. 3 MPG seems to be the most common mixed driving MPG calculation I have achieved in the past, with up to 17. 5 on long-distance freeway cruises. I validated the overhead within . 3 mpg of actual on the first tank's hand calculation, a variance that is consistent with the past.

I was one of the complainers two years ago. As my 2004. 5 CTD 600 was one of the first 100 produced, it took a while to hear that most owners were disappointed with fuel economy. I had the reflash done at the dealer - worth perhaps . 5 MPG, argueably. Everyone said "wait till you get some miles on her. " That was worth a couple of tengths, maybe, at 22k. However, I would be stretching to say the truck got 1 MPG better than the day I drove it home until just before the oil change.

Previously I ran Chevron Delvac. The new oil is Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5W-40, combined with a Fleetguard Stratapore filter. I chose this synthetic for the Cummins endorsement and off the shelf availability over Amsoil, Royal Purple and other fine products. BTW, for this or other lubricants, check with local petroleum distributors before buying at Walmart, Autozone or other consumer outlets. Most distributors will sell over the counter retail to little guys. PBE was just over $80 for a case of four one-gallon containers at Canyon State Oil in Las Vegas. The same quantity from Autozone would have been about $150 in quart containers.

I was only looking forward to reduced change intervals and longevity benefits, but now I am stoked about the MPG too! It's looking like an honest ten percent improvement. I wonder what will happen when I go synthetic in the transmission, transfer case and differentials?

I took my truck to a Valvoline Instant Oil Change with fleetgaurd filter in hand. They charged 59 for the oil change with PBE synthetic, then gave me 10 bucks off for bringing my own filter.

Do you mean Chevron Delo 400? Delvac is manufactured by Mobil...

Also, the rest of the drivetrain was factory filled with synthetic.

i used that premium blue last time i changed the oil and was very happy w/ it but i changed to castrol because it was buy one get one and it was the same weight as the blue

Yes, I meant Delo . . different "D Word," sorry!

Am I correct in understanding the transmission, transfer case and differentials are factory-filled with synthetic? I guess I believed the diffs might be, but was unaware that the trans and x-fer case were.

You are correct, all synthetics in driveline.

transmission-ATF+4

front/rear axles 75-90

transfer case ATF+4

Synthetic in engine will not void warranty as long as API CI-4/SL if you can get API CI-4+/SL is slightly better.

I don't believe that the factory fill on the auto trans / transfer case is synthetic. I think it is petrolium based ATF +4. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I do know the rest are synthetic.

And, according to my diesel tech at the dealer locally, as long as the oil meets the spec required by Cummins, your good. I was running the 5W-30 at the time and that was why I asked him.

Also, I noticed about a 1 mpg improvement when I switched my 03 over to the Amsoil.

yep your wrong

I've been using Sheel Rotella T synthetic. It cheap(er) and is sold at Walmart. Its' kind of smelly, but when you add three or four ounces of MMO the smell all but disappears. (takes a few days). My 2004. 5 was produced in January of 04. The fuel mileage is only 15-16 @ 31K local highway use. This mileage is actually considered to be "better". :{

I have been running Amsoil in my cummins diesels since 93. I think they have great products my 93 has 230,000 on it with out a problem , I have a bypass system on it and change the oil every 100,000 mi.

I put my 04 on it at 15,000 I use 5w30 in the motor, ATF in the trans and transfer case and 75/140 in the differentials @ 60-65 MPH I can run between 21. 5 and 22 mpg.

I just returned from a 2500 mile trip from SLC Utah to Tucson Arizona, I was driving from 55 to 90 most of the time up and down canyons, my truck is the an 05 15k miles with SB Auto, Airaid filter I also installed the 4" air intake to the air box that was suggested in the last TDR highly recomended, less than 20 bucks! and 4" flow through exhaust, 285 tires, plus bully dog programmer I ran it at the tow mode approx 70 hp I like this power setting the best for overall performance, I love the canyons no one passes unless you let them truck averaged 19-20 mpg entire trip, the longer I drive it the more I love it, I had the dreaded vibration at first after several trips to the dealer with out success, I finally loosend up all the motor and transmission mounts and drove it around the block a few times, I dont know why but this solved the vibration, the truck is a rush to drive, I just wish it could get 30mpg!!

Anyone seen an 0w40 thats approved? I run 80-90 psi. oil pressure with 15w40 and would like to try something that flows better.
