American Axle Ratios

Does American Axle offer a ratio between 3:73 and 4:10?? Say a 3:90 or so???

I'd like something around 3. 54 or numerically lower for my Freeway Flier I miss my 3. 54s

My situation is somewhat opposite. My local deal brought an '03 by last week for me to drive. While I am taking into account that it only had 11 miles on it, it seemed geared very tall and was rather gutless.



I love my 4:10s for towing but they are a pain when I have to deadhead a long distance to pick up a trailer. Hence my hope that American may have an in between ratio.



Also, does American use the same carrier for all their ratios or are there changes as the ratios get higher like Dana?

According to their website, AA offers their 11. 5" diff/axles with a range of gearing from 3. 54 to 5. 75.

The name of the company is American Axle... ... ... . but everything is in metric. Bet they want to be paid in US DOLLARS though... ... ... ... . Anybody have some Euro-dollars we can send them?

Maybe i'm wrong, but they use to be 3. 54's with 16in. tires. Now the are 3. 73's with 17in. tires. Does'nt this work out close to the same, and if so what does this do to the 4. 10's ?

Checked your Cummins? It's metric too. About half of your truck is too.



Us old timers had better get used to it... like it or not. It drives me nuts grabbing the right tool from the box... some fasteners are metric and some are US standard. I still have to get a handful for the metrics... but I'm getting better at it.

stick, the stock pre '03 16" tires (265/75/16) and 17" (265/70/17) are exactly the same diameter at about 31. 5"

Why not just go with bigger tires to achieve the ratio you are looking for. Of course if you do that, you will need more power to turn the larger tire, which means gauges, Edge box, bigger exhaust and the fun begins.

Its not something I would do if it were my truck, but a lot of guys do use tire size to change the stance of their trucks and alter gear ratios. Stop by some time when you get a chance, I would like to see the new ride.

3.73s act same as 3.54s

My 00 2500 had 3. 54s and turned 2000 rpms at 70 MPH. My 03 2500 has 3. 73s and turns 2000 RPM at 70 MPH.



Can anyone explain this?

There is probably only 100 RPM differance between 355s and 373s. The new 17" wheels and tire probably got most of that. DC should have gone to 373s a long time ago... ... ... ... ...

One of the reasons D-C stayed with the Dana with a 3. 54 so long was because Ford has the rights on the Dana axles with the 3. 73 ratio and D-C would have to pay Ford a royalty to Ford for each Dana with a 3. 73 sold... that would be a "cold day".



One of several reasons for the axle change on the new Dodge HD to American Axle.
