I want to tell you why I took out the K&N filter...

I have had ams oil by pass filters installed on vehicles before. I still have one settin in the shed. I got tired of paying outragous bucks for the bypass. I decided to just change the oil more as it was less than the cost of the bypass (buying the big one). Having nearly 2000 mi on my truck I am concidering dusting the thing off again and installing it. So here is the ??? What is the cost on those things now? and what oil are you guys using with it. My budy sells the stuff and is all he uses in every thing he owns. gear oil, transmission fluid, hydralic oil in skid steers, deisel oil you name it. And I have a neighbor who sells Shaffers oil. I hate to throw money away on special oil. Especially when I have a 55 gal barrel of John deere 15/40 plus 50 oil in the shed for all othe the other machinery around here???? They run fine for 10000 hours with this oil. Isn't it good enough???

If the oil meets or exceeds that required by Dodge/Cummins, then it is good enough, provided you remember to change the oil at the OEM-specified intervals. I would occasionally suffer a brain fart and forget to change the oil at the right time.

That's the main reason I installed the dual-remote filter and switched to full synthetic. I've got 20K miles on the oil right now. The analysis came back telling me to continue using the oil and send in another sample at the normal interval. After reading the results and specifications, I agree with the analysis.

All told, I think it cost me around $400 to switch to the dual-remote and synthetic oil. I've avoided three oil changes now, thus saving $180. That's also nine gallons of oil kept out of the environment (just a side benefit; I'm no enviro-thug!)

I also recently switched all the other lubes to synthetic. Preliminary results are showing a 4. 5% increase in fuel economy. All of my previous long-haul trips, unladen, have resulted in around 17. 1 MPG. This trip, I saw 17. 9 on one tankful - a number I havent' seen since the truck was new. I'll know more when I finally return home in a few weeks. Also, I didn't notice any change in fuel economy after switching to synthetic engine lube.

The BE-100 Bypass filters are running a little under $30 (sugg retail)+ shipping.

You don't say what brand of "stuff" your buddy sells. I assume you are refering to Amsoil. If he is a "real" buddy he might sell you what you need at his (dealer) cost to get you started. Dealer cost is quite a bit lower than retail (example: dealer cost for the BE-100 bypass filter is about $6. 50 cheaper than retail price). If costs is holding you back (especially if you are not sure about the product) maybe your buddy will be willing to sell at dealer cost so you can "try out" the product and see if it is something you like and will be interested in continuing to use. At this point if you are sold on the product you have a few options. Either enroll to be a dealer, or a cheaper route is the new preferred customer program (which still allows you to buy at dealer cost). I think Amsoil claims the preferred customer program savings pays for itself if you purchase over $100 a year. You can either become a dealer and sell the stuff to earn a little extra $ and purchase for yourself at dealer cost or go the preferred customer route and not bother with being a dealer and simply purchase for yourself at dealer cost. Talk to your buddy about this to find out what's best for you.

I see no harm in giving the Amsoil 15W-40 a "trial run" with the bypass filter. If you are then sold on Amsoil either continue with the 15W-40 or step up to thier more expensive Series 3000. At the very least since you have the by-pass filtration system you should use it regardless of what oil you use.
