For the sake of good discussion . My Indy let it drain really well this time. And added the whole 2.5 gallons per my instructions .I told him I would take care of any added make up I did not want it over full like the last two times. It’s exactly dead center on the dip stick now so by my calculation’s 3 gallons is a bit over full by about 1 or 1.5 quarts .Probably goesnt really hurt anything but thought I would just mention it

Strange it would be over using 3 gallons, I just had mine done Tuesday, dealer installed my 3 gallons of Amsoil and its right at the full mark..

dipsticks are not the most accurate device on the planet.
if Cummins calculated that the engine holds 12 quarts, and drain the engine oil and replace the filter, why not put 12 quarts in and not overthink it.

Makes me wonder why Amsoil sells oil in 2.5 gallons. Seems strange to me

the standard size retail containers for diesel motor oils are quarts, gallons, 2.5 gallon and 5 gallons pails as well as 55 gallon drums.
You will notice for car oil's the 5 quart jugs are also popular at many retailers like WM.
But I'll give you credit for wondering why, I never ever thought about it at all.

He’s likely not letting it drain long enough.

Also, the filter drains back into the pan overnight so it should show a little overfill if you’re checking it after sitting all night.

Because two of them make a 5 gallon box.

Last weekend, I changed the oil in my 2005 by draining the oil pan overnight with the fill cap open.

The next morning I removed the oil filter and replaced it with a Fleetguard LF16035 that I also prefilled from a fresh gallon of Delo 15/40 (please dont start in on the prefill…old habits die hard).

I installed the new filter, then poured the remainder of the open gallon, and then two more gallon jugs, into the Cummins.

While it was slightly overfull the next morning before I made a delivery, the next morning after driving it once but before driving again, I checked it and the oil level was right at the upper line of the dip stick.

Bottom line is that when the oil is properly changed on these motors it take 3 gallons of oil, not 2.5.

that sums it up, doesn't it.
Cummins calculated the volume of the oil pan.
some of their more industrial model ISB's have a 15 or 19 quart pan.
but the pickup truck engine uses 12.
For the life of me, I don't understand why people take it to extreme lengths and dont just dump 12 quarts in with a filter change and call it good to go.

This engine is a challenge to check the oil on due to hot/cold of the 3 gal of oil changing the reading by one quart. The filter slowly draining back also changes the cold reading. So you wind up checking the oil the same way to know what the reading is.

That's 15 min after a hot shutdown. Or cold before the first startup. These should read the same. The "extra" 1 quart from the oil filter draining back OR the 1 quart from hot oil. Thus the same reading.

You prefect doing it the same way so you know if the engine is using oil or making oil. It's not just about the oil change. If your engine doesn't use oil that's great but you check it anyway...

FWIW you don't get 1 quart of oil back out of the filter when the engine shuts down... I suspect maybe 8 ounces or so at most.. the filtration media acts like a sponge.

problem with dipstick decisions for anal people is the fact that a dipstick gives a general idea for example, if the oil is between Add and Full, the level is fine.. don't read into it any further.

Did my 2014 yesterday and 12 was below the safe/low line. 13 quarts made it high, but within range.

It’ll siphon back through the filter until there is enough air to break siphon. Anytime I’ve had mine off it’s 2/3 full.

Regardless of what you dipstick reads , drained properly , and with a filter change its "12 QUARTS" . If I were having an issue with what the dipstick was reading on an oil change , I would do exactly what the capacity of a 6.7 calls for , "12 QUARTS" . Then establish where that is on the dipstick ,and stick with that mark ,even go as far as marking it as the full mark .

I wouldn't be putting 13 quarts in it ,if that"s what you did .
