I have read all the old threads I could find regarding Amsoil 5-30 wt oil. I am wondering if anyone has any update as to its use in a 2nd gen. I have been running Amsoil 15-40. I recently read a oil comparison by 540rat. A Google search will lead to his article. In the anti wear testing he has done, he claims Amsoil 5-30 is in a class of its own regarding anti wear capabilities. very interesting reading. I am considering switching to the 5-30.

The 5w-30 HDD and the 15w-40 AME have the same additive package.

The HDD does meet the Cummins specs to run a 30wt, but it doesn't exceed them.

I ran the HDD for a while and now run the AME. The AME has much better UOA.

If you don't tow, don't sit in traffic, and live on the highway then the HDD might be okay but based on what I mentioned above I wouldn't run it.

I have ran both in my truck over the years and personally prefer the 5-30hdd in the winter time only and the 15-40ame in the summer. While I had no issues or bad oa's with the 30 in the summer (or the 40 in the winter) I felt it was just to thin I did notice more oil in the puke bottle running it in the summer compared to the 40. I also could hear a noticeable difference in start up ease and noise using the 30 in the winter vs the 40. In fact within the next couple weeks probably switch out the 30 for the 40 which if the last few years holds true (mileage wise) should get me through until fall when I will switch back to the 30 for the winter time.

I have run both over the years. I tow and run on the highway and do not baby my truck. I myself prefer the 15W-40 over the 5W-30. If I wasn't towing or hauling and lived farther north in colder climate then I would probably go back to the 5W-30.

I'm going to stick with the 15-40. I ran across some of the Amsoil recommendations I had printed years ago. They recommended the 5-30 and the 15-40. In their current recommendation, they only recommend the 5-30 for very cold conditions.

I ran the 5w30 once (a long time ago, you may have seen my post) but when I ran it in the summer my wear metals were markedly higher than with the AME. But we had some days near 110 degrees that summer and with elevated humidity at times.
