Amsoil Air Filter - How much oil do I leave on it?

Just got my Amsoil air filter a few minutes ago #ad
. It's obviously over oiled. The plastic wrapper is sticking to the foam and the cardboard box has oil spots all over it.

So, exactly how much "blotting" is correct? Do I gingerly touch a rag or paper towel to the surface, or should a bit of pressure be applied?

I want enough oil on it to be effective, but don't want any getting into the turbo or intercooler, etc.

I cant say for certain how much oil it needs. Mine was soaked when I opened it up. I took 2 paper towels (on each side) and lightly squeezed the filter between them. I went through a few paper towels and the filter is still pretty oily, but the top of the air box it clean and dry.
 
I don't think the oil you saw was anything more than from just sitting in a flat position during shipping. Mine came with some oil spots on the wrapper too, but I blotted it lightly and got very little oil. No sign of oil on the turbine, so I'm happy. It sure cleans the air better so far. Oil and turbine wheel look good.

I have about 12,000 miles on my Amsoil air
filter. No sign of any oil within the air
tube or on the turbine blades. I do have a
few runs of oil that dripped from the bottom
portion of the airbox onto the inner fender
though. The oil is so heavy that I feel the
filter would have to be very over oiled to
have any sucked into the intake system. I
still suggest that you blot the filter with
a couple of paper towels though just to be
sure.

Also there is no sign of dirt getting by the
filter. Everything under the hood is very
dusty though so the filter is doing a fine
job after over 12,000 miles.

Take a rag or two and use light to moderate pressure to squeeze some oil out. When I first recieved mine I thought it was over-oiled, called Amsoil and they said it should be good to go out of the box. I did this and pulled the filter-minder down about half way and had a bunch of oil leaking from the airbox drainhole. I ended up dabbing a fair amount of oil from the filter and had no further problems. Just be careful not to remove too much.

I think the filter would have to be really over oiled to suck any oil into the turbo and/or intercooler. Typically gravity causes the excess oil to drain (drop) from the bottom side (air intake side/pre-filter side) of the filter into the bottom of the airbox, which then leaks out the drain holes and onto the inner fender.

I would dab some oil from the filter and run it, if the filter-minder shows some restriction then dab some more oil.
