Actually Gene, I had the worse case scenario with a filter YOU sold to me (that is to say I bought it though you, you didn't really sell it to me). The filter both leaked oil and passed dirt. It came from the factory grossly over oiled, but all the oil was at one end of the foam. I put it in the box after squeezing out most of the oil and it still leaked all over the place. Then after 3K miles I got back an oil analysis showing 30 ppm silicon. Either part of the filter was not oiled at all or else the Amsoil filter oil contains silicon (which I doubt). So I dumped the oil and cleaned and re-oiled the filter myself doing pretty much what you just described to distribute the oil evenly over the filter body and sealing edges. I only used 1/4 of a bottle of oil. There was no oil leakage at all. After 6K, I did another oil analysis which showed only 5 ppm silicon. While this may not seem particularly impressive, this result is much better than I had ever seen using the Fleetguard paper filter in my part of the country. Those 6K also included a 200 mile trip through a dust storm so thick that I had to slow down to 10 mph on Rt 80.
So while the filter is a PITA to service once a year, it works great under extreme conditions.
