I just purchased a new/used Amsoil air filter from a fellow TDR member who was moving up to the BHAF. He was nice enough to wash it clean before I got it. Question is, do I re-oil the perimeter foam sealing edges on both sides or not?? I applied the oil to the coarse foam side and massaged it through to the metal screen side. Is this correct?? What is the best way of doing this without over oiling? Thanks for your help.

PINTA at best!

Check all over for oil making your fingers damp, but not "pooling"

If it does pool, blot it off with a paper towell.

I will probably be going with a BHAF, just for a change to see what all the fuss is about.

If I do that, I think I REALLY need a scoop to bring fresh air in!

This is starting to sound expensive.

Pain-IN The A.....

Yup, the edges are the same. If you get too much, when it gets hot, it will run down your fenderwell.

So far, I have only heard of overoiled filters making messes, never underoiled letting dirt by.

Actually Gene, I had the worse case scenario with a filter YOU sold to me (that is to say I bought it though you, you didn't really sell it to me). The filter both leaked oil and passed dirt. It came from the factory grossly over oiled, but all the oil was at one end of the foam. I put it in the box after squeezing out most of the oil and it still leaked all over the place. Then after 3K miles I got back an oil analysis showing 30 ppm silicon. Either part of the filter was not oiled at all or else the Amsoil filter oil contains silicon (which I doubt). So I dumped the oil and cleaned and re-oiled the filter myself doing pretty much what you just described to distribute the oil evenly over the filter body and sealing edges. I only used 1/4 of a bottle of oil. There was no oil leakage at all. After 6K, I did another oil analysis which showed only 5 ppm silicon. While this may not seem particularly impressive, this result is much better than I had ever seen using the Fleetguard paper filter in my part of the country. Those 6K also included a 200 mile trip through a dust storm so thick that I had to slow down to 10 mph on Rt 80.

So while the filter is a PITA to service once a year, it works great under extreme conditions.

You must not have complained rudely, or I would have remembered!

I did remember a guy who got one totally UNOILED! Luckily, he did not put it in.

I complained to Amsoil on that one, from then on it seemed they dumped gallons of oil on the things. The "Oiler" must have got an *** chewing.

The one I am using I went through a ton of paper towells, it was a mess.

Lowest I've had is 4, the highest is 9-with 40,000 miles on the oil, no by-pass.

I still hate cleaning/re-oiling.

Bad dust storm eh?

Many times these filters are stored on edge for a prolonged time and the oil can flow to the low side. The oil filter in my Audi is set up to mount on edge and I do notice a bit of oil in the bottom of the housing when I service it. I have had excellent oil analysis results just the same.

I never complain, Gene. I just endure. :)

I told myself that the filter had just been stored with one side down as Ted just suggested and that everything was going to be just fine. So it was my fault for being too lazy to re-oil the new filter. Actually, I think I did grumble about this to your wife.

I’m only posting the story to warn others to check out the oiling before installing a new filter. I really think the filter is a fine product. Especially for people living or working in dry, dusty places.

Lee,

Evidently your grumbling is very quiet!

I asked, she seemed more concerned about fish hatcheries at Pyramid Lake!

We got to go back out there!
