Last Night I installed AmsOil 15W-40 motor oil and the AmsOil by-pass system. This by-pass system is truely impressive. I had dropped the oil on a hoist, filled it w/2 1/2 gallons and then moved the truck over to a flat bay to install the by-pass system. I checked the oil after letting it run for 2 minutes and it was black as it normally is right after changing. I installed the bypass system and brought the oil up to full again and headed home. This morning after getting back to the shop I checked the oil again to make sure it was full and the oil was crystal clean. #ad
#ad
This is really unbeleivible to me, it has never made it two mile with out becoming black.

[/QUOTE Mr. Drawson: I think it is unusual for your oil to be black only two minutes after startup. I use Amsoil 15-40 in the warm monthes and have never had this occur. The oil on the stick shows clean for quite a few miles after the change. I have thought about installing the bypass, but so far I'm stuck on frequent oil changes. Good luck. Jerry

That's exactly what I witnessed at an Amsoil
booth a few months ago, before I bought my
Ram. Their demo involved running some oil
through a competitor's filter, adding some
black substance I think was printer ink, and
it went through the filter and was still
black. Then they took the same oil, ran it
through the Amsoil dual-bypass and after a
couple of minutes, the oil was about as clear
as new oil. Pretty impressive!

I just got back from a 150 mile trip and now have a total of almost 300 miles since the by-pass system. THE OIL IS STILL CRYSTLE CLEAR!!!! #ad

I installed the dual remote filter on my '98. At about 5000 miles, the oil is still clear. If the bypass filter is removing soot, it must be removing similarly-sized particles. I'm glad I installed the system and would do it again.

Now, I just have to take the filter adapter plate off and re-do the fittings. Seems I incompetently installed a nipple, and it leaks. I'm not looking forward to the work; it was a pain getting everything connected in the first place!

All concerned--I know that this bypass system has been scrutinized umpteen jillion times, but, quite frankly, I have ignored it. Back in the 60's, I was the victim of the toilet paper roll oil filter gizmo. It would have worked, if a restrictor was put in the line back to the pan. At that time, I wasn't bright enough to figure it out. My question is, what else is the bypass system filtering out?? Could it be removing desirable components of the oil?? Anyone?? TIA----Ron

frijole,
The Amsoil by-pass element is capable of removing solid particles as small as 1/2 microns, but is an absolute 1 micron, however, filters are not rated in microns. Instead, the filter industry has established standardized tests for measuring performance.

These tests include Life and Efficiency Tests (SAE J726, HS806, and J905. They also have a Beta Ratio Test (SAEJ1858). In the Efficiency tests(SAE J806 and J1858) THe Amsoil BE-90 By-pass element was 99. 8 percent at 5 UM and from 10 UM's to 20 Um's was 99. 9 percent. As a comparison, the Fleerite LFR 8750 element was 63. 2 percent at 5 UM's and 94. 0 percent at 20 UM's.

The Amsoil By-pass elements will only remove solid particles, not chemicals or additives.
Hope this clears the question.

Best regards,

Wayne

Wayne,

You forgot to mention that an AMSOIL BE-"xx" by-pass filter will also remove water and/or Antifreeze from oil. Similar to the way GORTEX works.

You are so right about that adaptor plate and its fittings. It is a royal pain! But I cured that in short order--I turned up a cup out of bar stock aluminum and made what looks like a large hollow "bolt" out of steel. It seals to the aluminum with an o-ring like a hydraulic fitting. The aluminum piece has one fitting that comes out of the side, the second fitting comes out of the bottom center of the "bolt". Both of these fittings are o-ring type, just like the ones on the new dual filter head. If you want the hoses horizontal, use a straight fitting in the side of the cup and a 90-degree in the "bolt". If you want the hoses to drop vertical, reverse the fittings. Makes the installation a 'piece of cake'. I have installed about 20 of these units on the Cummins engines and have had no leaks yet.

I have run now for almost a week, done some heaviest towing ever(backhole on trailer). The oil is still clear with no sign of blackening.
Here are some of the things that I've noticed and my theories... .
I am running higher pressure now both hot, cold, idle and cruise. I believe this is just like the TST boost elbow, by by-passing alittle oil the oil pressure relief spring in the pump keeps my pressure higher. ( the TST elbow is a restrictor and has a small by-pass orfice)

I am running cooler. #ad
Although I have replaced the OE thermostat with the updated one it still cycled right up until it got hot this summer. It was running steady right at approx. 180deg now it is back to cycling running empty and it was just under the 190 deg towing the backhole. Towing my house trailer this year pulling the same canyon I was right at 210 deg. This I believe is not the by-pass (although having the extra oil going through it would cool it some what) but due to the AmsOil 15W/40 oil. I was running Quaker State 4X4 15W/40 Syn. blend.
