I Run The 15-40 With No Ill Effects. The Only Reason I Would Run The 5-30 Would Be If I Live Where Its Under 32 Degrees All The Time.

I switched my truck to Amsoil 5-30 at 12K from the dealer's oil. It has 15K on it now and I am seeing about a 1 mpg increase in mileage. I only drive about 10-12K a year, so I am going to sample next summer and see how it is dealing in hot weather. It only gets mid-high 90's in late July to mid August but average is low 90's. I only tow occasionally, and usually don't exceed 12K pounds. I am planning on changing the filter at 6K and then change oil and filter a year from previous oil change. Flame suit on!!!

I have been running the 5w-30 for a couple yrs in my 04. 5 I use it because I think it is a little slicker then the 15w-40 and because I race the truck it is a little lighter weight and will let the engin rev quicker and run cooler. I tow my first gen truck to the races on a gooseneck as a back up in case I break. So I am not just using it a a race oil, I have no complaints it is a great product.

I tried the 5w30 once and my wear numbers went up quite a bit over the 15w40 I was running, and they were worse than when I ran dino oil. But I think it was because it hit 110 degrees in this part of Washington when I had the oil in. That was enough to make be decide to never try it again. I wanted a year-round oil but it's too hot here for 5w30.

I am trying out the new AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Premium Diesel Oil (DEO). I know it is mostly for the new 07' and up but I was looking for an oil with a better start up viscosity but still had the 40w on the hot side. (5-w40 vs 5-w30). I had been using the 15-w40 with good results so I can not say anything bad, just looking for a better start up weight.

the 5-40 will offer worse wear results due to it's chemical makeup being designed for the 07' and up. i thought the same thing untill amsoil tech told me that it was not going to make a difference, the 15-40 flows at -54*, the 5-40 flows at -58 and the 5-30 flows at -60

Well I'll need to use what I have for the next two oil changes (I still have a case) then I guess I will go back to the 15-40.

I agree with Jim. The 15W-40 is hard to beat! The 5W-30 is MORE money and a great oil, but if you are not in a real cold climate, I would choose the 15W-40 HDD & Marine Engine oil.

Could someone explain to me why the 5-40 would have worse wear properties than the 15-40? I thought all oils were to be backwards compatable?

THe "NEW" 5W-40 CJ-4 oil is a VERY LOW ASH oil 0. 98% sulphated ash(setforth by the EPA) which reduces the TBN to 8. 0 (again setforth by EPA).

Some of the chemicals used in this oil also reduces the wear factor, thus in the 4-ball wear test (ASTM D-4172B) this oil shows 0. 44 mm wear scar versus the HDD & MArine 15W-40 at 0. 35 mm. TBN of the HDD & Marine is 12+.

Is the DEO 5W-40 backwards compatible? Absoluitely. This oil is not a good oil for extended drain intervals, due to the TBN as well as the lower ash content, however if Monitored using Oil Analysis, drain intervals can be extended.

The HDD & MArine oil IS NOT CJ-4 qualified like the DEO 5W-40 is, so for Diesel engines that DO NOT REQUIRE CJ-4 oils, the HDD & Marine 15W-40 is a better choice, and is less costly to produce & sell.

Remember, the Engines that require a CJ-4 oil also have Exhaust After treatment devices which have to be addressed, where the engines that require CI-4+ and below do not have these! :)
