New TD owner, draining water???

My Truck is one Big A*Sed Truck

I have a 2001 3500 4x4 HO with 6 speed manual transmission, which amsoil gear lube should I use in the rear ends, transfer case and transmission and how many quarts will it take?

Use Series 2000 75W-90 in the differentials and transmission. Front axle takes 8. 5 PINTS . Rear axle takes 10. 1 PINTS . Transfer case uses ATF 5 PINTS. Transmission takes 9. 5 PINTS.

Hope this helps.

amsoilman,

What oil is used in the trans, atf or gear lube?? I know it's a dumb question but I can't seem to find any 2 people to give the same answer here locally. Thanks in advance.

The NVG-5600 6-speed does NOT take gear lube. The lubricant specified by DC is Texaco MTX 1874 STF. It is a thin oil on the low side of 30W. It is the ONLY lube you can use and maintain warranty coverage.

I am using Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 Diesel Engine oil in my 6-speed. It is a proven lubricant in these transmissions but it does place your warranty in jeopardy.

In the diffs, many use Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 front and rear, myself included.

In the transfer case, use Amsoil ATF. ATF is the specified lube. I am using the 5W-30 engine oil because I believe it offers superior protection. Several are using 75W-90 gear lube. Once again, to maintain warranty coverage, use the ATF. Good luck with your choices. Oo.

If using Amsoil and you have a N-5600 failure has anyone had warranty voided because of it? Seems stealer is so dumb about everything else do you think they could tell, send out for testing, etc??

RBachant,

I do believe the DC spec is MS-9224, for the NVG-5600 which calls for an engine oil. The 5W-30 is preferred.

All of the people I sell to use the HDD 5W-30 series 3000 engine oil in these transmissions.

There was an answer I wasn't expecting. I've never heard of using engine oil in a manual trans, thank you.

After getting my truck back together from my 5th gear band-aid fix this evening, I didn't have any Amsoil ATF on hand for the T case so I put series 3000 5w30 HD Diesel oil in it. Since I see others are doing this I will probably continue with this oil since it offers better protection then the light ATF.

Where can I get the prices on all of the above? Been considering changing to Amsoil, but I never see it any where but advertisements. No body local carries it in my area.

The 2002 Edition Amsoil Product Selection Guide does specify the Series 3000 Diesel Synthetic Oil SAE 5W-30 for use in the NV5600.

I had a 1982 Volvo turbo that used ATF in the manual transmission. shifted smooth as silk. Ain't it fun?!!

By all means join Amsoil, it is worth it and you can have product shipped to you via ground UPS.

My $. 02 worth.

Riflesmith; How long have you had the HDD 5W-30 in the T-case? Sounds like a good idea to me.

The 5W-30 HDD has been in for 6,000 miles now. No problems,

no proof that it is a superior choice, either. However, it has much more Zinc-Phosphate anti wear additive in it. This is the reason I switched from the ATF.

Axle Gear Lube

My owner's manual (2002) states on pg. 216 that "thermally stable" SAE 80w-90 Multipurpose Type GL-5 gear lube is delivered from the factory in Dana Model 60F axles (front) and SAE W 90 in Dana Model 80 & 70 (rear) axles. On pg. 165: for ALL towing use SAE 75w-140 synthetic gear Lube in the rear axle. On pg. 221 says NV 5600 manual transmission uses "manual transmission fluid" Mopar part# 4874464 (this is the ONLY lubricant recommended for use). I plan to use Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 synthetic lube in the front axle and Series 2000 75W-140 in the rear. The transmission lube I will have to research the MIL spec. & ASTM spec. to see what is compatible, but in the mean time I would use what the book calls for. Also states on pg. 127 that synthetic engine oil MUST NOT be used before the engine is fully broken in, typically this will take 10,000 miles of heavy hauling and 20,000 miles of light duty operation. But on pg. 46 it states that engine does not require a normal break-in period due to its construction and normal use is allowed provided you:

a. warm up eng. before load

b. do not idle for prolonged periods

c. use proper trans. gear to prevent lugging.

d. observe oil press. and coolant temp.

e. check oil and coolant frequently

f. vary throttle positions at speed

Anyway, this is getting long but I am learning all kinds of good stuff here. Great forum! :) :)

To all folloeing this post:

amsoilman is right on the money. I have 35k miles on the HDD in my NV5600. Same on the HDD in the crank case - running the by-pass filter system! I'm also an Amsoil Dealer (Direct Jobber)

As far as break-in myths with synthetics, you are only reducing friction, not eliminating friction. I do new vehicles bumper to bumper every week. I even have customers that won't accept delivery on equipment unless it's dry or the dealer will put the amsoil in for them.

From what I have been told, HD motor oil contains phosphorus which is harmful to yellow metal used in synchronizers. Another choice is RP Synchromax which is formulated to go in transmissions (synchronized) and transfer cases and it is 100% friendly to synchronizers, it is suggested to replace ATF and motor oil in transmissions. It is fully synthetic and desingned to be a gear lube instead of using motor oil in a synchronized transmission. I just got a case and put it in my NV-241HD. Now my w4d engagements are 100% grind free. I dont know where to read about ti on the web but if you send your email address I'll send you the Adobe file that describes it.

I feel much safer having a oil designed to go in a transmission than using engine oil there.

Beware: The only approved oil is Texaco MTX (1874), ANY other oil puts your warranty in jepordy.

-- email address removed -- put synchromax in the subject line and I'll email the info.
