That decision is up to you. The transmission in my 99 would shudder before I replaced the filter and fluid with Amsoil ATF.

Synthetic Universal Transmission Fluid Product Code: ATFQT-EA

Offers excellent lubricating protection and better performance over a wider temperature range than conventional automatic transmission fluids. Recommended for a wide range of applications, including GM DEXRON® III-H, for 2005 and older vehicles originally calling for DEXRON®, DEXRON® II & DEXRON® III as well as Ford MERCON®, & MERCON® V plus many others.

In my 01 I just pumped all the atf+4 out and changed the filter with a Mopar and used the Amsoil transmission fluid. Oh my goodness it shifts so much better. I have 132k miles on the original transmission. I also dont drive the truck for weeks at a time and now dont have to wait for 10 plus seconds for the fluid to circulate to get moving again. I think there is a tsb about torque converter drain back.

Bottom line is use the Amsoil and you wont regret it. :)

I think Amsoil is great. However, I don't use it in auto's because I feel the need to change the fluid every 15-25 thousand miles and I just can't afford that much Amsoil.
