I changed my transmission oil for the first time today. I put 5-w30 HD amsoil full synthetic in after searching here on TDR. My transmission does shift a bit easire/smoother than before. I've gotta say that on my 2WD there is not too much room to work under there without any jacks, non-the-less I got the job done. I had 4. 5L of oil ready for the re-fill but I could only get 4 back in before it started to overflow out the fill plug. I figure when I drained it through the bottom cover bolt hole some stayed in the case, that's why I couldn't get the last . 5L in.

Anyhoo I'm happy with the results,

I put the same oil in my 6 speed this summer. It made a noticeable improvement in ease of shifting.

The reason I put 5-W30 in is I baught it almost a year ago! It was one of those projects I never got around to doing.

I noticed there were small gold colour shavings iin the used oil. I'm assuming it is brass? How much is normal (if any) for a truck with 110,000 miles? It was my first change also.

Sounds just like me, I have Amsoil on the shelf from over a year ago too :-laf

I ran the 5w30 in my '01 for awhile and liked it. After that I tried the Redline MTL and liked it even better.

I didn't take the PTO plate off to check. I guess I should have since there were shavings in the oil. I will definately next time!

I went away from from Amsoil 5-30 to thier new MTF fluid, now that made a huge difference. Glad you liked the 5-30 but I would bet that next time if you were to put the new Amsoil MTF you would find it even smoother... ... ... ... . just my 2 cents... ... . later Jim.

I've got that stuff bookmakarked. I will go that way next time. Thanks for the info. I'll probably change it again in the spring and at the same time I'll clean the magnet.

Thanks everyone,

John

I've also been running the Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 in my NV5600 for the last ~60K miles. I changed it about a year ago for the second time, but the next time I change it, I may go with the newer lube Amsoil now has.

I have been extremely happy with the shifting and performance of the 5W-30 so far.
