Which gear lube that amsoil makes is the right one for the NV5600. I'm worried about extreme pressure additives eating the syncros.

Thanks CR toney

I'll be going with the series 3000 5w30 next time I change, that way the trans and transfer case will be running the same lube!

What oil does Dodge say to use in the transmission. All my manual says is a Dodge part number. Isn't it made by Castrol?

If my memory serves it is a texaco product. Some have found it in five gallon pails but it is very expensive and hard to find. For synthetic amsoil seems to be the only option but I honestly did not look around. I run the 5w30 in my engine and have a pretty good supply so it was easier than trying to fidn teh stock fluid in Mt.

Maybe the search will be back up soon:rolleyes:

You're right, I just looked at Fritz's site and the fluid is called Texaco MTX. So the question is, whats so special about Texaco MTX?

Problem is ANY other fluid than Texaco MTX will void your warranty, on the PTO covers it will say MTX only. I'm not saying other fluids wont work but MTX is the only approved one. There is someone here who has put put over 100k using synthetic 5W-30 motor oil. Oil change time is a good time to add a PTO filter and a Fastcooler. You can get a drain / fill plug out of a NV-3500 to replace your fill plug, they are magnetic tipped.

Tex,

This is one of the legal issues that is crystal clear. If the manufacturer stippulates a specific fluid it can only be a suggestion unless the manufacturer supplies the fluid free of charge. They can stippulate (SP?) the standards for a fluid but not the exact brand and model without supplying it free of charge. This is not in any way a part or related to the Magnison-Moss act but rather designed to prevent alliances between oil and vehicle manufacturers that would hamstring the owner into using a specific oil to maintain warrenty.

Bob I would have to dig it up but anything that fits the specs is ok legally. I do think that we are pushing it a little from that angle as this is techically a motor oil.

I am a little suprized that we have not heard from the Amsoil gurus on the subject. I think since we are relying on the good word of amsoil and their recommendation to use this product in our trannies we are also to a certain extent relying on them to back it up if it is a problem.

Of course the negative to any other oil than the Texaco is if you have a problem you are caught arguing your case against DC or Amsoil.

The way I look at it is what they don't know won't hurt them. How is a DC tech going to figure out you are not running the texaco fuel with out analysis and what are the chances they would look. Not a very comforting position I know but see as Texas Diesel just responded with some info as i am typing I will stop babling.

Ted

Ted, I agree with you 100% but is there any way to win a fight like this? Many times cost is the deciding factor in an OEM's decision on lubricants but we, the end customer, most times are willing to buy the best available lubricant despite higher cost. I would much prefer to have a synthetic in there.

Well obviously agree I am using Amsoil. As usual the one with the most money wins. I think maybe Amsoil thinks the same, not enough money to fight DC. Perhaps they are not as confident in their product in this application as we are. Scary thought!!!!:{

Oil

I was having trouble getting the transmission into any gear after it was at operating temp. I installed the Fast Coolers and Amsoil 5w30 series 3000 and I have not had any shifting problems. I would recomend this to any and all with a 6-speed transmission :D . Sam

6 SPEED NOT GOING INTO GEAR

DAWG, THIS IS THE FIRST POST I'VE READ CONCERNING THE SIX SPEED NOT WANTING TO GO INTO GEAR. MY 2001, BUILT 1/2000, 23,000 MILES, IT SHIFTS A LITTLE ROUGH BUT HEY, IT'S A TRUCK. THE THING THAT HAS ME BAFFLED IS IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR AFTER SITTING AT IDLE, IN NEUTRAL. NOT FIRST, NOT SECOND, THIRD, FOURTH, SOMETIMES FIFTH BUT USUALLY I END UP JUST JAMMING IT INTO SECOND BECAUSE BY THIS TIME I'M HOLDING UP TRAFFIC. YOU CAN PUMP THE CLUTCH, REV THE ENGINE, NOTHING WORKS. WAS THIS YOUR PROBLEM? PLEASE ELABORATE. TIA

TOM

(Sorry about the Caps)

Yes I changed from ATF to series 3000 5w30 in my t-case.

So far so good. Next week will tell the tale! I'm leaving Sunday (4-28) Towing my 13,000 5th wheel to MM.

T Peterson, if your truck is sitting in a level place where you don't have to hold the brake to keep it from rolling, then you go to try and put it into gear does it start to creep forward a bit? It is likely you have a problem with your clutch. It is not letting it totally disengage. I had some trouble shifting when new and replaced my slave cylinder (found on driver's side of bellhousing) and it shifts much better now.

Vaughn

Vaughn,

It acts like it could be the clutch, but to answer the question, no it does not creep. Could a slave cylinder problem be intermittent? Would temperature or the amount of usage have any affect on a slave cylinder? My problem seems to be worse after driving around in town, stop and go, on warm/hot days.

Am I reading this right, you put Series 3000 5W-30 IN YOUR TRANSFER CASE  I hope you meant transmission (manual) and not transfer case. I think you better re-read your owners manual on recommended fluids to use in the transfer case. Your right, next week will tell the tale of using an engine oil in your transfer case :{ .
