I currently have 45k miles on my last oil change. I'm running the Amsoil dual by-pass filtration and Amsoil 5/30. I change the full flow every 7k and the by-pass every 14k. I do an oil analyst every 7k. Analyst comes back with recommendation of continued use. At what point do you change the oil? Do you keep using the old oil until the analyst comes back with a recommendation of changing? How many miles have some of you guys gone on the same oil change?

How long

If your doing oil analysis @ 7K, wait till it tells you to change. Changing both filters as often as you do, and adding new oil each time, it may be a long time.

Man! this oil sure is black and thin looking  Kinda hard to believe it's still in good shape. I guess you just have to trust the analyst.

Amsoil in my 99 has 91,000 on it-still okay. Delo 400 in one of my dump trcks with 8. 3 cummins has 415,000 miles on it and still going strong. I use a Purodyne bypass filter system and change filter elements every 15,000 miles and factory filters once a year. :D

Cliffman,

Could you post your analysis results? It would be easier to help you make a change interval decision if we could see your numbers.

FWIW, I change my Amsoil 10W-40 HPO after 20,000 miles, regardless of analysis results. The oil could go longer, but I have received my money's worth from the product at that point, so why push it?

A clueless question... Do you have to have the bypass filter to have such longevity of the oil? I just put Amsoil in my truck and plan on changing it every 10K and the filter every 5K. Will that work??

Cliffman,

Your oil looks OK. Your additive package is holding up well. Your soot level in the oil remains low. With a TBN of 11. 73 the oil's ability to neutralize acids is still excellent. The viscosity of your oil is virtually unchanged from the new product. I don't see anything to worry about. Your bypass system and oil are serving you well.

Where did you pull your samples from? Have you consistently taken the sample in the same way each time?

I like it when things "serve me well" :) :) . I pull my oil from the dip sick tube using the Amsoil sucker thingy. I make sure the engine is at running temp prior to performing the surgical proceedure:rolleyes:

Your numbers look very good. You could extend the test time to 10,000-12,000 miles if you wanted. I've the same set-up as you. I just changed both filters, and will try to test between 12,000-15,000 miles before I change the full flow filter.

Is your oil black when you look at it on the dipstick, or on a white cloth?

Mtngoat,

You don't have to have the by-pass system. If you use Amsoils SDF-80 filter for your truck, you could go between 7,500-10,000+ miles before changing the filter and topping off the oil. An oil analysis test on a regular basis will be the only way for sure to know the longevity of your oil. If you feel comfortable at 5&10 that's fine. You can go longer if you want, but you need to make that decision because it's your truck.

Do you work for Amsoil? What I really need is # for stock replacment Oil Filter for 2002, CTD? Thanks

Cliff... we are in exactly the same boat... my samples look like yours and I changed my first load out at 50k just cause I felt guilty. . but the samples said good to go still.

this load is at about 18k +/- now.

Guilty feelen is the word for it dude. Kinda like your cheaten your beloved Cummins out of something it deserves  Have you ever checked you oil right after a hard run. I did. Coming home from Colorado last July. 115 degrees outside coming though Las Vages. The oil looked like black 5 WT. Kinda beaded up on the dip stick   That's why it's so hard to believe it's still good. But what the hell...

Yes, I'm an Amsoil Dealer. On paper, Amsoil says I'm Certified, others say I'm just certifiable. The replacement for the OEM oil filter would be an SDF-80, air filter will be a TS-106, and a FF-1093 will be the Hastings fuel filter replacement.

I ran Amsoil in my 2001 and changed it every 20,000 miles. I did NOT have any bypass filtration, just stock filters (Stratapore). My numbers were always great after 20K but I changed the oil anyway.

I did this with Amsoil 15W40 HDD oil, Amsoil 5W30 Series 3000, and Mobil Delvac 1. Summary of experience:

Best initial numbers (first 10,000 mile sample) was with Delvac 1 in terms of metal counts, but fell off noticeably during 2nd 10K. Oxidation was higher.

Best overall numbers especially at end of 20K was with Amsoil 15W40. Wear metals great overall and very low oxidation.

Poorest numbers with Amsoil 5W30 Series 3000. Wear numbers were higher than dino oil. Atributed that to 110-degree temps & ungodly 128F heat index last summer in E. Washington.

I just took delivery of Amsoil HDD 15W40 to run in my new 2003 which I am switching to this weekend at 16,000 miles :)

I may add a single remote bypass.
