I want to add one of the Amsoil ByPass Filtration Systems, but am not sure which one to use. Are there advantages of one over the other. How about installation difficulty ?

I'M NOT AM AMSOIL EXPERT BUT I HAVE USED THEIR PRODUCTS FOR 15 YEARS SO HERE GOES. THE DUAL FILTER SET-UP USES TWO DIFFERENT SIZED MICRON FILTERS. ONE OF THE FILTERS IS IN YOUR NORMAL LUBRICATION/FILTRATION LOOP. THE OTHER FILTER IS A MUCH SMALLER MICRON FILTER THAT TAKES A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF YOUR OIL AND THIS PROCESS TAKES 5 TO 10 MINUTES TO FILTER ALL OF THE OIL IN YOUR CRANKCASE. I HAVE HAD TWO OF THESE SYSTEMS ON PREVIOUS VEHICLES AND WILL SOON BUY A THIRD. THE KITS ARE COMPLETE AND OF HIGH QUALITY BUT ARE SOMEWHAT UNIVERSAL. HOPE THIS HELPS. ANY MORE QUESTIONS JUST E-MAIL.

I would buy the single element bypass system, the BMK-11. I installed one on my Ram by custom making a bracket out of 1/8" steel and attached it to the passenger side battery hold down through bolt. This was done in similar fashion to the installation in issue 26 of the TDR. The dual element bypass system may severely cramp your installation. There are also two other disadvantages:

1. The full flow filter outlet hole size is only 3/4" pipe. (OEM is 1")

2. The entire life blood of your engine is routed, at a very high rate of flow, through rubber hoses.

Just my 2 cents worth, hope it helps.

I just installed the Amsoil BMK-11 on my 2000. I had a bracket welded out of 1/4" steel (41/2" X 41/4" X 8") which fits behind the cross member on the passenger side. I drilled holes in the welded bracket to match up with holes already drilled in the Ram's cross member. This is a very solid mount and the BE-100 filter fits horizontally out of harms way. I routed the oil return line down through the oil fill cap.

For more information go to the top of the page and do a search for By-Pass Oil Filters.

My setup goes a little to the extreme, but I think it works. I have the dual filter setup, and since I wanted to relocate the batteries out of the engine compartment anyway, I had a bracket built to fit where the passenger side battery went. Very professional setup, looks like it should be there, most people don't even notice there are no batteries in the engine compartment. As for effectiveness, the bypass filter is where it's at. I have talked with members with well over 100,000 miles on the same oil, and oil analysis showing their oil is in better shape than conventional oils are off the shelf (running AMSOIL HD diesel oil). Factored over that period of time, changing filters at 12/24k miles without changing oil seems like a pretty economical deal to me. Just my 2 1/2 cents worth.
