Has anyone switched from amsoil to rotella synthetic? I can buy 2 oil changes of the rotella synthetic for the price of 1 amsoil. I guess what I'm asking is rotella as good as amsoil? Look forward to your replys. Thanks!

I am guessing you are referring to Rotella T6.

I can buy Amsoil AME 15w-40 and run it for 25,000 miles on one oil filter in my truck with flying colors (factual proof from a UOA) for less than Rotella T6 and go 10,000 miles farther.

Navy Dood is correct. You're throwing away perfectly good oil. I run my signature truck 18-20K miles with a filter change half-way. I save the used oil to clean up used OPE engines before I sell them. If you know anyone with an '04. 5-'07, save the oil for them to use.

I went from Rotella T6 to Amsoil 15-40 to save money (~$5 a gallon). I only put 10K miles a year on currently, mostly towing, and I still change every 5K on the nose because I run a Smarty Jr. I have read that running any programmer will contaminate your oil faster than stock so that's why I continue to change so often. I have now 3 gallons of the more expensive 5-40 for winter. I might let this go 7,000. Yes, I know I should be sending off oil samples but by the time I do all that, I could have just changed the oil. Sometimes time is worth more than money.

Keep in mind your '06 will soot-load the oil many times faster than the '03. Even after 18K miles, the oil is still a medium brown color. Soot contamination at the last sample was less that 1/10 of 1%.

Generic inquiry as I have no dog in this hunt regarding extended oil change intervals. Diesel truck owners are the most techcially aware of all drivers and each has his own ideas of what works for them. I prefer to keep it simple with Fleetguard Stratapore filters and off the shelf lube oil. TDR has published articles on this subject and I recall one that the miles are not as big an issue as the length of time the oil sits in the engine. This technical writer recommended max one year between oil changes. Same writer is skeptical of the cost benefit of synthetic oils in this scenario. Personally, I reduced my annual driving/towing miles from 25K to 5-7K and switched from synthetic to mineral oil. I change the oil and filter once a year regardless of the miles. Regarding Rotella, Issue 76 has a good artcle with input from Lubrizol's John Martin on additive packages. The Rotella synthetic has a different pkg than the mineral oil. Happy motoring.

I just change will delo, every 5,000 and fleetguard filter... . and the fuel very other oil change... so 10,000 miles on the fuel... . simple I think synthetic is way overrated... .
