I changed my oil today. I had Amsoil 15W-40 in it and it had 15,000 miles on it. I changed the Fleetgaurd filter at 5k and 10k miles.

The oil was extremely black, not the normal black like it was after 5k with the Delo I used to run, but very black. Now I expected it to be darker, but it also had an odor to it, kind of like diesel mixed with it. It was at the full line, not over so I am not worried about an injector or anything but I am wondering if the Fleetgaurd filters aren't enough for extended drains.

My truck at times does see a lot of in town driving and idle time.

I sent off a analaysis when I changed the filter at 10k and for some reason I never got it back.

And what does it "smell" like?:)

Your oil is extremely black because of the Smarty. Smoke out the tailpipe is directly related to soot in the oil. I am not telling you the is either a good or bad thing but it is fact. It may want to try a 2 micron bypass filter arrangement of some type. There are a lot of them out there and they all work pretty well. I personally have a FS-2500 and I am extremely happy with it. As for the smell... If it smells like diesel then there is definately fuel in it. Get an oil analyis.

It ain't the oil. I think Wayne's rhetorical question and jjack pretty well answered your question. My truck after 10K and about 1/2 of it with the Smarty has a lot more soot in it than the last oil change. I don't have a distinct fuel smell, because I tend to keep my foot out of it.

I'm sure there is some fuel in it from idle time and such, but there is not enough to change the level on the dipstick.

I should of sent off another analaysis, but I didn't.

So is it a bad idea to run extended intervals without a bypass and with the Smarty.

That extra fuel coming out of the tailpipe must be leaving some in the crankcase also.

To help on this oil change, I may do as many as 2 things different that may be the difference. 1) I use the upgraded fleetguard filter instead of the standard filter. 2) even though I go between 7500-15000 on my amsoil, depending on driving condition, I will change my oil filter every 3750 as close to on the dot as possible. That may help, but, as for the fuel, I am clueless unless there were more diagnosis.

I am using the Stratapore filters.

I wouldn't worry about the smell too much, Amsoil has their own distinctive smell kind of like rotella. And there is no way I would change a fleeguard stratapore at 3700 miles.

JCasper how many miles did you have when you switched over, and did you run a short first interval or do a flush when changing to Amsoil?

49K when it went in and 64K when it came out. No I didn't flush it, maybe I should of.

It could be like was mentioned above and it is just Amsoil's distinct smell.

It also stains really bad. It is very hard to scrub off of the skin. Seems worse then normal.

The Smarty probably doesn't help either.

The base stock of a synthetic oil may be better and longer lasting than a petroleum-based oil's base stock. The additive packages, however, may be similar, and are a better indication of how long the oil should be used. The oil lubricates and cools the engine, but also collects acids and other byproducts of combustion. As an analogy, how often do you flush your bathroom fixture? Is it worthwhile to save water and flush only occasionally? TDR Issue 57 has some useful insight by John Martin and Robert Patton: “Finally, don't fall for the statement that synthetics can be cost-justified because they can be used for twice the normal oil change interval. This is simply no longer true. The additive package, particularly detergent, dispersant, and antioxidant levels, is the primary determinant of oil change interval. Also consider that extending oil change intervals is a gamble. You can monitor used oil data to determine if sufficient additive is present to continue, but one of the main reasons to change oil is to get contaminants (soot, sludge, etc. ) out of your engine. Some contaminants, such as glycol, can cause a lot of damage in a short time. ”

JCasper,

Much has been said regarding oil analysis on this site, and I sincerally believe the ONLY way you're going to tell if your used oil is OK, is by doing the oil analysis.

Personally, I have used the Amsoil synthetics for some 27 years, and am currently running the (AME) 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel oil in my 03' CTD. I utilize the "Amsoil" by-pass filtraton system and do oil analysis at 10,000 mile intervals. The oil in my truck now has 60. 000 miles, and the last analysis concluded the oil to be "serviceable for continued use"!

Is my oil "black"? Yes it is black, but I can put it on my hands and "wipe" it off very easily, whithout staining my hands. This is due to the filtration of the oil, as well as the oil itself.

Contrary to what some say with regards to oil "additive" pakckages", there are five levels of additive packages the oil companies can choose from, and still meet most requirements for Diesel applications. Amsoil uses the most expensive and highest quality additive package they can buy, as well as the very best oil base stocks that are available. This is why they can state the oils will last for extended periods on their "labels".

Oils are NOT a commodity, as some think. They are not the same!:)

Thanks for your input. I have been signed up as an Amsoil dealer for a few years, mostly just to get things cheaper for myself and I sell to a few friends.

Where did you mount your bypass filter? How often do you change those filters?

I have thought about adding one, but to this point I have not done so.

Here are some links on where to install the BMK-11 System:
