The reason AMSOIL is promoting extended drain intervals is because their multi-tiered distribution setup makes the product so expensive that without an extended drain interval no one would use it. How about AMSOIL testing Delo400 with extended drain intervals? I have not found a commercial trucker falling for the AMSOIL hype. Carry-on!

But am using the AMSOIL due to my environmental issues here in balmy northern Vermont. Now I really need to find something to address my growling powersteering pump, since it takes more of a cold weather beating than the AMSOILed engine.

Sorry Tom I don't buy your theory. I believe that ANY other well known (mainstream) oil on the market has more built-in layers (or tiers) from the manufacturer to the shelf of your favorite auto parts store.

I recently picked up a used 96 2500, 4x4 auto trans. I have no idea what oil the preveous owner used over the last 74K miles and there is no manual.

I hear a lot of people using 15w40 and 5w30.

What oil weight does Cummins specify?
Does it need a CH-4 ot CG-4 rating?
Is 5w30 too thin?
Any thoughts on Rotella SB (synthetic blend) 10w40?

I live in Delaware where we get upper 90's in the summer and occasional singel digits in the winter.

Gregor, Cummins says 15w40w for their engine. Brands like Shell Rotella T or Chevron Delo 400 just to name a few are great oils. L. E. products are very high grade. Amsoil also top shelf. But these oils are not cheap. Shell and Delo are available at Walmart and will do a good job in your Engine. I would go back to where I bought the truck and find the owner to see what he used in the engine. Regards Pete

15w40 it is. Rotella or Delvac 1300, depending on what Walmart has on the shelf friday.

As for the preveous owner...

I got it at from a Ford dealer just west of the middle of nowhere NJ.

I just got a Haynes manual. Between the manual and this site I should be OK.

Thanks
