Listening to some info about legal challenges in CA (Bazerkly and San Fran). Some rights group want to change the legal status of animals so that the people who own them will be Gaurdians and not Pet Owners. Apparently this has already passed in Bazerkly and is apperently being pressed in San Fran.

I'm sure that some people think this is just some harmless nonsense and pay no attention to it ... but just think about it for a minute and carry this nonsense out to a final conclusion.

If you are just a gaurdian, then you would be legally responsible for your pets well being. If you let your dog out and he gets hit by a car, YOU are responsible for neglegence and could do time. Your cat climbs up a tree and then falls down and gets hurt. You again can be held responsible for there "pain & suffering". And there is a army of new lawers out there just looking for more work and $$$. "Hello Mr. Jones, I'm representing Buffy in the neglegence case agains you for Buffy's pain & suffering to the tune of 1 million". Laugh if you will, but do you doubt that this could not happen???????? Especially in Bazerkly?

Now lets extend this to Farmer Brown ... if the farmer is only a gaurdian of Spot the dog, isn't he also only the gaurdian of the cows, chickens, sheep, pigs, etc... . And it would not be in the cows, chickens, sheep, pigs's best interest to be turned in to burgers, shoes, cutlets, etc... . not to mention stealing the chicken's unborn young for your omlet. And that the farmer is responsible to maintain the animals in a life style they are accustom to ... until they die of old age?

Let this nonsense spread and we will all be turned in to vegatarians by force ... God forbid you harm any animal for food, we are only gaurdians of the lower life forms on this planet.

These whacko's with too much time on their hands would like to change horse's to companion animals as opposed to livestock. Don't get me wrong, my animals get better care then I do. Take away the livestock, take away what little tax break they provide. Not to mention like you said, all the other implications.

Don't blame it entirely on Calif, Boulder, CO enacted this law already. But then again where do the people in Boulder come from?

If they decide that my pets are now part of the family that I'm finacially responsible for, does that mean I can get them a Social Security # and claim them on my taxes as dependents?

FATCAT,

I think people should be responsible for their pets, and care for them as you would care for any family member. I think your response is as far out of line as their actions. Truth me, there are bigger things that you can get excited about.

Thats friggin INSANE!!

I wonder:

How would counsel gather testimony from the animal?

How would damages be assessed?

What if a dog attacks a cat; would that be a "hate crime"?

What if your dog gets "busy" with another dog, would you be responsible for the pups?

Shovel: Good idea. That would squash the deal in a hurry, when the govt. loses tax revenue.

I'm out of line???

Hey Pit Bull,

I do care for my fat cat at home. One of them got run over by a car about 2 years ago (outdoor cats) and that sucked (he was a good mouser). But with these animal wacko's they would bring suit against me on behalf of "Fluffys" estate and either extract a settlement from me on "Fluffys" behalf (i. e. the lawers own pocket or some animal rights fund), or I'd be doing time like as if I let a baby crawl out into the street and get hit.

(And no my dead cat's name was not Fluffy ... just used it to protect the innocent).

The problem is that many people just blow this stuff off and say it could never happen, then one day it happens to them and you say "how the hell did this happen!?".

What the hell is in the water over in Kommifornia?????????

I understand your angst, regarding these extreme positions taken by some of the animal rights groups. But remember your talking California :(. Here in Missouri it is the other extreme. Puppy mills and conditions that would resemble a Nazi concentration camp. There is some place between California and Missouri where people don't have their head up their exhaust pipe. You sound like me, I'm alway going off about something that pisses me off and my wife just tells me to cool it. Like they taught me in school, you have your circle of concern and your circle of influence. The concern one just raises your blood pressure. The influence one is the one you have to concentrate on. I guess this post was your effort, to educate others of this problem so you could influence the out come. Sorry if I rained on your party. Keep up the good work and I hope you end up with an outcome that will make people take more responsiblity for their pets but not give Lawyers the chance to get $$$. I hate Lawyers (sorry, there I go again)
