aniversary trip to Chicago in Jan, downtown hotel?

Wife and I will be celebrating our 16th wedding aniversary this coming January. We'd like to take a trip to Chicago as it's only about a four hour drive and we've never been there. We'd like to stay downtown (I think) near some shopping area's, museams and some night clubs.

Can anyone recomend a nice hotel in that area that we can stay at. I'd like it have a parking garage so I don't have to worry about finding one of those and I'd like to able to walk to most of the stuff we do. We're from a very small Mayberry type town so the big cities make a little uneasy but we'd both like to see it.

I've stayed at the Palmer House. Close to most activities and nice rooms, restaurant, etc. Not cheap though.

You probably will want to stay somewhere on or near Michigan Avenue and most places have parking garages. The Palmer House is nice and I have had friends stay at the Hilton and enjoyed it. Taxi's can take you anywhere from the hotel.

It's gonna be cold in January but you should take a carriage ride.
