New Kid on the block . . .

After several months of surfing the forums, I finally joined TDR. The amount of information is excellent; I hope that I will be able to pass along some of my findings about my big Dodge. I was just reading the thread by nascar mark - over 300hp from a 1st gen?!!?! Impressive! I'm planning some changes to mine and thought I'd get some feedback from you guys. My plan of action (BOMBing) looks like this:

1) Guages

2) BHAF

3) 4" exhaust, no muffler

4) 16cm2 turbo housing

5) Pump adjustments

6) Bigger injectors

I'm starting with the low $$ stuff first, then more later. I tow about 6K lbs to the dunes and don't want to replace the Getrag yet, so I don't need to get unreasonable torque! Sorry for the long post, looking forward to talking with you guys.

Welcome Keith! Glad to see another name on the list. Hope you get lots of enjoyment from that first gen.

If you change the pump settings, try to record where it is at before moving. That way you can go back if you need to. Several times I wish I would have done that with mine.

You seem to have it pretty well planned out. One thing I would do is to replace the injectors before the housing. If you are doing in steps rather than all at once, I think you will get more for your money with the injectors first. I can't remember if your truck has the 18 or 21 housing, if the 21 then I don't know for sure. I know with mine(was 18), the injectors made a huge diffference while the 16 turbo housing was a subtle change.

Welcome to your new home.....

I would also do injectors before housing but it is more costly than a 16cm. You may want to consider going to a 14cm since you're going to do the exhaust anyway. Using the 14cm means the downpipe needs to be shortened about 1 1/4" right were it joins the turbo exhaust outlet. Just a thought.

Pump adjustments should include timing advance as well, especially if you're going to put in new injectors.

Paccool has some good advice too, mark everything and record before/after. . it is a bonus to be able to go back to original settings if needed. After a while you'll become so familiar with your truck that you may not need to but for now, mark and record, including EGT's RPMS, speed etc.

That way you'll know what affect each change has on your setup.

Welcome Keith! Maybe you've already read up on this, but to help make your getrag last, change the oil, and refill with 5 qts. 5W30 synthetic. This overfills it by about 1 qt. One issue seems to be the input bearings not getting enough lubrication, and the higher oil level seems to help. Mine is hanging in there so far... :D

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I appreciate all the good advice and tips. When I get some $$ saved up, I'll get some info on where to get the injectors and which ones to get. From looking at the forum conversations, I have seen comments about Power Wagons, Prince of Darkness (Lucas) and I think one other type of injector. I'm going to start with the BHAF and 4" exhaust first!

Thanks again,

Keith
