Ok, the doors have been floppin a bit, but have been fairly dependable. The other day I tried to switch mode to defrost and no matter what I do I cannot get it off of panel. Could this be a vacuum line problem and not just the doors?
The 3rd gens use electric motors to change the mode doors.
More than likely the pins in the doors are broken.
Happens alot.
In order to use Dodge doors the entire AC/Heater box has to come out which means AC evac and recharge, etc. AND the dash has to come out.
Option 2 (best bet) and easier go to Heater Treater: Dodge Ram '02-'08 they have a kit for about 200. 00 to replace the doors WITHOUT taking the plenum out and only takes a couple of hours vs. a ton oh hours.
They also have adiagnostics section on the site to check your system/syptoms.

Mine has had trouble switching to defrost from the dash vents, too. One thing I've found that usually works is this: When your engine warms up enough to run your heater, set it to the fresh air/dash vents with the temperature knob on hot. When you feel warm air coming out the vents switch the mode knob all the way to defrost. Wait about 30 seconds then turn your temperature knob all the way to cold, leave it for a second and then turn it all the way back to hot. For some reason this seems to work for me when turning the mode knob doesn't. No idea why, but it does.
