My wife dropped the truck off at the dealer today for a couple of minor fixes (under warranty), and while it was there I wanted them to "take a look" to see if they could remedy my occassional miss at idle. This was not the main point of the visit but if they had time they could look at it. The wife emailed me back this afternoon and said they were putting in a new set of injectors! It was my understanding that people were having major issues getting injectors replaced under warranty and with that said, I can't believe they are going to put in a complete new set. The truck has 23,000 miles on the odometer and gets worked and played pretty hard. I have had a couple of injectors replaced already because of all out failure at idle. Has chrysler changed the policy on injector replacement or did I just catch them on a generous day??? I darn sure ain't complaining though.

I didn't have a whole lot of trouble when they replaced all of mine. the only problem I had was convincing them there was an issue. They lied to me about what they did to test to see if there was a problem but they did replace them.

Injectors are no longer a star released part. now ifyou have one or two suspect injectors all six get yanked.

FYI, the service manager may ask if you want your valves lashed while they have the valve cover off. Little they know you have to lash them anyway when doing an injector job ;)

you'd hope so eh... but i could see someone pulling all the top end apart and just putting it back together with no lash adjustment. . it should be pretty close if everything goes back in its original location but you never know. .

I was recently surprised too. They replaced one for me, had it done in a day. I was expecting the run around and several days of waiting for the parts. They had the injector in stock, really surprised me! I wish they had done them all, I know they need it at 96k miles.

The truck runs great except for an occassional miss on one cylinder at idle. It was number 2 at first, then number 5 (Ithink). I just use the temp gun on the manifold test and it never lies. If the dealer does the cylinder drop test, sometimes it can be misleading on which cylinder is missing because of the way the firing order takes place. I was having a steering gear box replaced and just asked them to take a look at the rough idle if they had time. I never expected them to replace one injector much less all six. They did try and up-sell me for powertrain service, filters, blah blah blah. I suppose the tech didn't notice the mag-hytec covers everywhere and the date tag hanging off the fuel filter housing. :-laf

I am going to hit mine with a heat gun this weekend and see how the temps compare.

I have found it works best to start the engine cold and take your temp readings immediately while the engine is warming up, otherwise you end up with a hot manifold and it can be difficult then to tell which cylinder is actually running colder than the others.

When I first fire mine up cold I get a little miss in the first few seconds of idling, almost sounds like a backfire if your standing by the exhaust pipe. Ever so often I'll get a slight miss if it has idled for a few minutes, so I just take it and run the heck outa her and she seems to clear up and never misses a beat. Only 14k on the odo. I'll talk to the service advisor at the local dealer and see what he can do for me. Its nice having a dealer where you used to work, got worked over by the owner pretty hard, but all the co-workers still like ya :-laf They do everything I ask, no questions.

Working in the oil patch I've come across a number of ex-DC diesel techs, who have switched over to heavyduty. All of them have stated the "cylinder drop test" proves nothing and is a waste of time. DC engineers determine the schedule for trouble shooting, and for any of the dealers to be paid "warranty work" they have to follow procedures. Many of these ex-techs can easily diagnose injector failures or other problems, but because of DC policy they can't go above and beyond other then procedures. So with alot of these guys having their hands tied they quit and move on to other occupations where they are paid to be real mechanics rather then glorified "USB port cable guys". I myself have gone outside DC to get my injectors done, even though I still have warranty! Just tired of "cannot reproduce condition". I too used my raytech found #1 cold and #5 hot (over fueling), had rough idle akin to a gasser with a racing cam, injector knock and poor mileage/power. I believe better filtering would go a long way in prolonging the "common rail injectors". JMHO

Don't forget fewer "events" along with better filtering would extend the life of those injectors. Of course at the expense of noise and emissions.

How about this nice little update. I picked up my truck last Thursday and didnt' even look at the paperwork as they said everything was complete. I went out and started my truck only to hear a loud howling noise? I checked the power steering fluid, not even on the stick! The gearbox slack adjusting nut was backed all the way off the stud and the air filter lid was laying on the airbox and not snapped in place. :mad:I walked inside and got some ATF+ and a wrench and finished the job myself. It gets worse. Then I looked at the paperwork. That's when I read the famous "Cannot duplicate concern" line. My service advisor had specifically said they were going to install 6 new injectors since my truck had been in eight times for bad idle conditions. If you are ever in Fairbanks, Alaska... ... ... ... ... ... . stay away from Gene's Chrysler at all costs!!!

My 06 cummins/auto 4x4 seams like its missing and idling rough. I change fuel filter every 10k. The truck seems to run fine other than the rough idle. I want to take it to the dealer, but I am afraid its not going to be covered under warranty. The truck has 37k on it. My mods are few;psm cold air kit, cool hose, foam true flo panel air filter, and 4" stock exhaust with cat delete and 4" magna-flo race muffler. ie. STRAIGHT PIPE!! I run diesel fuel additives in every tank. So what do you think I should do? Thanks. Jeff

Has anyone had any problems with a backfire through the exhaust when cold in the mornings? Also I can feel the hammering in the number one injector line and am wondering if the two are related?? Truck goes to the dealer tomorrow morning and all input I can get before hand would help tremendously!! Not trying to hijack this thread but I think that these are the same types of problems you guys are having.

Thanks
