Never thought about it before, but I think it stays the same. It is a spark knock not a mechanical issue.

Quite a few have found the valve clearance to be off from the factory. While still within factory specs they could be adjusted. I think you have an 06'. The 06' specs are slightly different than 05' and below.

Maybe a little semantic problem here,, maybe should have said detonation. Whatever ya wanna callit it is the combustion hammer of multiple flame fronts slamming together.



I did not mean "spark" to necessarily mean sparkplug associated.



But nevertheless I stand corrected and humbled.

if it is getting louder then it could be injectors, valve lash, and depending on year of your truck it could also be the injection pump.

When I'm going through my neighborhood,everyone thinks UPS has something for them. Big letdown when I appear. :{ With a 24 valve it never gets any better,just part of the charm.

Thanks KeelerR, for your sensitivity. I guess I was a bit abrupt on my answer. I did not mean to make it sound like I was taking offense.



Never the less you bring up the valid point it should not be called spark knock or spark hammer. That choice of words comes from the old timers with which I used to work,,(at least then I thought they were old but doesn't seem that way anymore) and they called it a spark knock.



On the farms in Eastern WA we used tracklayers as farm tractors. One of the popular tractors was a CAT 3 cyl. Talk about a knock. It idled at about 300 I think and High idle was 925. Anyway as a kid I was always asking questions and I remember the answer to the one regarding all that noise was "Its a spark knock son".



But there ios no doubt that is not the correct word choice for sure. Im not too sure either that "detonation" could be considered correct as when we speak of detonation in a SI engine it means someting bad. In a CI engine it is merely the flame fronts meeting because the whole compustion chamber is flaming at the same time,, unlike a SI engine where the flame progresses across the chamber from the spark plug.



If all this leads you to believe I know what I'm talking about you may be mislead!!!

If the new ones get any quieter then you might as well drive a gasser. Love the old clatter, the louder the better. Like has been said they don't change unless something is worn or maladjusted. Oo.

I have a '98 12 valve and a '06.

How in the world could anyone be concerned about the "clatter" of the new trucks? :-laf I have to keep checking to see if it's still running.



I guess I'm getting old and I know my hearing isn't as good as it was. Memory and everything else too.

Mine has gotten slightly louder, but I really think it's the ULSD doing it's "magic". If I run a heavy mix of Power Service it quiets back down. Who knows.
