I am getting ready to install guages this weekend. My question is that I ordered the autometer thermocouple (#5244) but I don't see why I need an adapter. The end of the compression fitting which is supposed to go into the manifold is 1/4"... isn't this the right size? I've noticed people with the same thermocouple mentioning adapters. . i'm just not seeing where it could go. .

please enlighten me!

1/4" NPT is the thread size used. Make sure the probe does not bottom out in the manifold when tightened.

I've got the same Autometer #5244 competition probe kit, and the threaded probe holder part is 1/8-27 npt, not 1/4. If you are in doubt, take the part to a hardware store and match it with a tap.

My truck is a 12 valve 97, but I had to drill the manifold either left or right of center, there's a cast rib running down the center on the inside & you can't drill through it!

I agree,
I have the same probe, and I used a 11/32 drill bit,and a 1/8 npt drill tap, and it worked great.

DMurcock - Truck MetalTech and Big A. I have the same probe. I just installed mine and all of the paperwork that I got says to drill and tap a 1/4" hole. Well, once we did that we went and got the probe, noticing that there was no 1/4 - 1/8" adapter in the box. They only supplied me with a 1/8" fitting. So I had to find an adapter to go from 1/4 - 1/8", and unfortunately all I could find was a brass fitting. It is working fine for now, but I don't know if it will handle the prolonged heat. Just my $. 02

Kevin,
I think my directions also said to drill a 7/16 hole, and tap to 1/4 inch tap. I double checked before I drilled, and sure enough the directions were wrong. The right bit was a 11/32, and the right tap was a 1/8 npt.
