Another Engine Problem - Fixed! - Thanks

Well, another engine problem, and any help would be appreciated.

I've got a 2000 4X4 2500 Quadcab Short bed with about 31K miles.

3 days ago my check engine light came on with the code of P-1693. No other codes (key on-off check) or symptoms except I might remember a slight stumble at start-up once.

Last night on acceleration I noticed only about half throttle, but then it seemed to be ok for the rest of the drive.

On the way back, I noticed the same thing, but this time I noticed that the tach wasn't working. Cycled the key/engine about 3X and then all seemed to be working fine.

Today on the way back from a drive, at startup no tach and the throttle felt dead, and then the engine stalled. Tried to restart, but it wouldn't start.

Tried a few more times, then it eventually started with the tach working for a second, then you can hear a "click" under the left side of the dash, and then the tach would quit working. I turned the engine off and tried again. Sometimes it wouldn't start, and then when it did, the tach would go dead after a second and that "click" sound under the dash.

I decided to go ahead and try and get it home even though the tach wasn't working and very little throttle. On the way home, the tach started working and throttle was ok, and all seemed fine.

Any ideas on What's up?

Thanks for your help!

I forgot to add that I'm on an island in SE Alaska, and there are no dealers I can just take it to.

Maybe that's not all bad??

Thanks for the help...

Sounds like a computer problem to me. But my 12valve is all mechanical so I realize that is of little help. Maybe its time to get on the phone to a mechanic? But you should get some good advice here too.

Are you on POW? Sitka? I never really thought about it but it must be a PITA to get your truck worked on down there. Here at least there are a few shops, so you can chose who screws you over the nicest.

T-Smith,

That problem sounds like a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor.

The sensor is located behind the starter, so also the starter has to come out.

Sounds like your Crankshaft Position Sensor... ... it is pretty common on our trucks for it to go bad. The part is about $40. 00 from Cummins. Careful taking the old one out..... use lots of penetrating oil and twist back and forth. They have a nasty habit of breaking off if you over muscle it. Clean the hole in the block well and oil up the o-ring on the new sensor prior to installing.

Good luck!:)

Call Cummins first....

My 01. 5 does not have a crankshaft position sensor. Only a camshaft sensor located underneath the VP 44. I'm not sure when the crankshaft sensor was eliminated, but it be worth it to check first.

Thanks for the help!

I've got a sensor on the way from Cummins NW. They've been very helpful for any of the parts I've ever needed. Parts asked for the engine serial #, and they thought the crank sensor would be a good place to start for this problem too.

BTW, I live in Wrangell. Come see us at http://www.wrangell.com

Thanks again for the help, and I'll post again when I get the sensor installed.

Got the crank position sensor on Wed, and installed yesterday. Only took about 1 hr 20 min including replacing/upgrading the starter contacts. Guess I got lucky that my old sensor wasn't stuck in the block.

Everything seems to be working fine now. Thanks for all the help!

Also, I'm glad that I replaced the starter contacts. The one on the battery side was halfway worn down already! Hope the new ones don't do the same.
