I put off installing David's Vent Mod since I knew it would be a simple, but dirty and physical job - anything under the truck is a bit low tech and usually get your hands black.

I bit the bullet and after reviewing the instructions, making sure I had everything listed, and looking over the pictures, under the truck I went.

This is NOT rocket science.

What amazed me is that when I was finished I put 41 gallons of diesel in the truck. While it was filling I kept looking under the truck, wondering where all that fuel was going.

When the nozzle clicked off, I could see the fuel level in the fill tube. No foam, no burps, no question about where the fuel level was. That has NEVER happened before.

David, thanks for the great new and improved vent kit. It is true, I could not buy the bits and pieces any cheaper than what David will send them to me for. They are top quality, fit perfectly, and I have the advantage of all his research and experimentation.

I'll enjoy this mod every time I fill up and when I'm on my normal cross country towing trip, that's three times a day!

About 4 hours. I'm very methodical and never in a hurry. Also, my air compressor is not hooked up yet in my new garage and some air tools would have made it a little quicker (there are a lot of turns on the fuel tank bracket bolts!)

A floor jack is helpful, especially if you do not have anyone to help you with the re-instal of the fuel tank. I did everything by myself and a helping hand would have been a major help.

I found about 3 inches of diesel still in the tank, even thought I ran it to a gage reading of Empty. That relates to OVER five gallons. Be sure to drain that out before you start to put the tank back. I tried first to put the tank back in but the weight of the fuel shifting back and forth makes balancing the tank on the floor jack impossible (I used a piece of plywood under the tank to be sure not to damage the plastic).

This mod is simple and I almost put it off again. One fillup will make you a believer that the trouble is worth the gain.

Everything was from under the truck. I have a 2x4 (or is that a 4x2... whatever) and I needed to put a floor jack under the differential to slide the tank back into place once the new vent line was in place. I only needed a few more inches of clearance and you 4WD guys most likely will have no problem.

David's instructions and pictures really tell it like it is. My only problem was with one of the fuel line clips. One was twisted in such a way that I could not get my finger on but one of the two clips (one on either side of the cap). I played with it for a while and decided to use a cable tie to wrap around the clip, allowing me to pinch both sides with the tie. Once the fuel line came off, it was back to the races. You could probably use a heavy piece of string, anything that will wrap around the clips.

This job would have been nicer if I had spray washed the underside of the truck first. My last trip was in some snow and slush in Flagstaff and the garden hose did not really get the underside clean. It was just a grunt and do it type of job and like I said, a friend or a floor jack will make it much easier.

Take David at his word on the instructions. Have the right tools and all will go well. I could get my fat head up between the frame rail and the fender and see very well the connections, even get both arms and hands in to work with them.

Refueling the truck is no longer an aggravation. Now if it would only make to cost of the fuel cheaper... :-laf

What configuration did you use on the tank fitting? There are two. Washer over the top or washer under the bottom. Interested because this mod is still waiting to be done but, I'm waiting for the right opportunity and time. Also, What direction did you point the elbow fitting?

Dumb question, but what is the point of the vent mod? Is this to help with slow top off? I have no problems topping off. You mentioned 41 galllons. How have you added 6 gallons to the capacity? Can you put a link to the package?

Yes sir, this kit does wonders, can't wait till morning so I can fill up again!! Oo. Heck, I might even go out tonite and fill up just so i can see how much I can put in there again!!

So, if I don't have slow fill up, I don't need one of these? How does it help you get 6 more gallons in there? The filler neck can't hold more than 1/2 gal right?

DFrank when that knozzle clicks off are you actually seeing the fuel level at the vent opening if not your not filled all the way up. On most trucks when it clicks off it takes 4 to 5 gallons more to be able to see actual fuel, not foam at the vent hole opening.

I was one of the couple of guys who broke the bulkhead fitting during the install(it was in the 20's, so maybe it was a little brittle from the cold, but I probably overtightened it).

I put the washer inside the tank and the nut on top. Seemed more logical and I still had plenty of clearance between it and the bed.

This mod works great. I got about 39 gallons in my 34 gallon tank and it extended my range about a hundred miles. I could push it and go 700 without too much trouble. Thanks again, David!

I put the bulkhead fitting in the tank with the nut outside on top. This does give another half inch or so of ventable space. I had more than enough room between the vent and the bed of the truck. I have a long bed truck, 2WD.

DFrank, if you think your truck does not fill up slow, once you think you are filled, wait 30 seconds and then try to put more fuel in. You will be surprised that you can wait and repeat this filling many more times and put at least 4 more gallons in your truck. Many of our members want to be able to see the actual fuel level in the filler neck so they can check mileage accurately. If you read all the information on the mod and look at the pictures of a fuel tank that has been removed, it is obvious why the tank is "slow" to fill.

When I'm towing, I need to stop at truck stops (mostly FlyingJ) in order to maneuver the trailer. Truck stops have the large spout on their pumps and the flow rate is usually very fast. The vent issue is very aggravating in this situation as it is almost impossible to top off the tank without getting diesel splashing out the neck. The quicker venting and venting at the high point of the tank is a significant advantage.

If I can save a few minutes at each fuel stop, then I get to my destination 15 or so minutes sooner at the end of the day. Its the last hour and especially the last 15 minutes of a long day that are the hardest!

In the instructions for long bed trucks, David has you point the vent fitting slightly toward the driver's side. He also has a picture. I lined my up just like the picture and it worked perfectly.

I have had the vent-kit here for over a month now, but have not had the chance to do the install yet. I had originally planned this weekend to do the install, but again things didn't work out. I did find something out about the kit the hard way though, I was setting here in my recliner reading over David's instructions, looking at the hose and the 90 when I pushed the hose all the way onto the 90 (oh $^&#), DO NOT DO THIS the 90 has a barb on the end that is bascially one way (kinda like the chinese finger locks or whatever you call it), I wasn't paying close enough attention. I could not pull it back apart, I fought with it awhile, and finally dawned on me to try a dab of dishwashing soap on the edge. Being real gentle twisting back and fourth and alot of brute strength it finally came out. So learn from my mistake and if you don't believe me try it. :-laf

Tony- for my application, David included more hose than necessary. Since I had a lot of room, I ran the vent hose along the inside of the frame rail and it turns and comes out with the original fill and vent hose. It makes for a nice looking installation, resulting in about 1 foot of excess that I cut off.

Most likely you could have carefully cut the hose off the end fittings. I had only partially pushed the vent into the hose, but it still took me five minutes of tugging, twisting, and wiggling to free it. David includes good quality fittings, ones that will most likely stay in place after installation!

I'm no longer recommending that you put the nut inside the tank. One of the people that installed the fitting had the nut loosen after about 10,000 miles. In the updated instructions (I'm going to send them to everyone that has a kit), you put the nut on the outside of the tank and lock the threads with epoxy or super glue and silicone. After the nut is tightened, apply the epoxy to the joint where the nut meets the threads to keep the nut from backing off.

I have tried this mod twice and I am having one heck of time trying to get the black connector unplugged--------------Fuel lines were easy compared to the connector.

Don't wait! The price of fuel goes up $0. 10 every two hours, fill it now... ... ... .

I have the kit, but it's in the barn so I don't play with it like the other guys did (those barbs work great, don't they?).
