injector problems!

Roaring noise

Took my truck in today for an injector problem. Was driving home this morning and my truck stumbled, shook, and started missing about 20 miles out. I had my cruise set on 62 and it was maintaining that, so went on in. My cel was on and Smarty Jr. read the codes, P020 and P2146. After clearing them 3 or 4 times, and then reoccurring, I cleared it and went in the house and called the dealer and got an appointment to bring it in. Later, I was able to drive it to the dealer without getting a cel and come home in a loaner. This is the 3rd time this has happened, the first, I drove it several months before it happened again. The second time required replacing #5 injector, last summer, and I'm going to have them replace the suspect injector this time, instead of driving it til I can't. I've been running Jr on the torque setting and not racing, not doing any jack rabbit starts, or doing any heavy towing. I do run heavy (11,700#) all the time. Will running the Jr in this situation cause me to loose injectors?

Those codes indicate the solenoids are failing, not much you can do about the electronics just quiting. Highly doubtful the Smarty has anything to do with that type of failure. Just less than adequate QC at the Bosch factories. :(

I've got 20,000 more miles on the warranty. What am I going to do after that? Besides going to the dealer and having them replace them at dealer price? I would like to get some that would get me better mileage. How much am I going to need to save up to replace all 6 at once?

Check the different vendors, II, DDP, Wicked Diesels. You can usually pick a NEW injector with a bigger tip for around $400, give or take $20. Sometimes you can get specials cheaper.

Depends on how many miles they have on them and problems you are having. The solenoids are available I believe but not much more for internals. It ends up being a crap shoot at times with reman's on quality.

Thanks, Cerb. I appreciate your input. Hopefully I won't have to worry about replacing the injectors any time soon. I'm also thinking about when I will have to update my transmission.

My mpgs are up about 1 mpg after the injector replacement. I wonder if the other 5 were replaced, if it would go up 5 mpgs?

Kiker, is your compressor for the air bags mounted on top of the engine like for the pac brake? I had my #1 injector shorting to the base plate for the compressor giving the P2146 and the stumbeling/missing symptoms :-laf

No compressor, kompressor. I manually check and adjust the air pressure at the rear bumper. A compressor would make it a lot easier, tho!

Well, now I have a rough idle when first started in the mornings. I just started the last few days, but it does settle down after warming up. Did I get a bad injector on my last fix?

TWest,
Do you mean lope? By rough idle, I mean the whole truck is shaking and it really shakes when I put it in gear. Giving some throttle, it smooths out and by the time it warms up, I don't notice it any more. I guess I need to start saving up for a new set of injectors!

I have a customer In TX with the similar Problem,I sent down the test sensors for FCA,LV,Pressure, and the Cascade Valve nothing changed, So I sent one of our Stage 1 rebuilds down to him,He received it on Monday,I have not heard from Him ,so I know he did not install it Yet, His Injectors are New from Us also. His is just a little different then Yours, it stops as soon as you put it in gear or it warms up. he also eliminated the APPS by disconnecting it with no change. Lets wait and see if the pump clears it up, I am not convince its Injectors.

I have another appointment at the dealer next Friday, since I will be off work. It's still under warranty, so I'll let them try some more. It just costs me some time and wear and tear to drive 80 miles one way to take it to them. TWest, I'll be interested to see if you get the other Texas owner fixed up.
