My Son's 2015 ED with 26K miles died. A low oil pressure warning was quickly followed by rotating mass failure and a hole in the side of the block. The newly extended warranty is covering a new engine.

Got any pics?

Hey Todd, I know you are going to read this one..................any idea if they've improved the bottom end at all?

The cause was determined to be main bearing failure which destroyed the oil pump. The engine was covered under the original vehicle warranty. The settlement warranty extension will not cover this type failure.

What a shame, that 5.0 CTD V8 is sure looking to be a loss for Ram. The ED has a poor reputation now, I wonder what the newest version did to upgrade durability?

I would stay far away from Eco Europe engine according to VM not the same engine, only time will tell, the 1500 I had engine seize at 55mph towing small boat , talk about stopping in hurry!

I don't think FCA missed a whole lot, other than maybe eliminating embarrassing "rotating mass failures". That 5.0 was not a success even beyond Nissan, where it had neither the grunt, nor the MPG to make any sense at all. They tried pushing it for school buses, and other low GVW applications, but never got anywhere. Now, it's being discontinued. I do agree, though, that the development time and money could have been better spent than on a stillborn GM project.

There are many many negative reviews on the 5.0L CTD also. In fact, it went over so poorly that you cannot get that engine on a 2020 Nissan Titan XD. I looked at them.

My initial thoughts as to why there where so many negative reviews probably has something to do with Nissan's typical slow response time to customer problems as well as not having an existing relationship with Cummins to be able to quickly and adequately resolve engineering and programming problems. Just my hunch.

I liken it to a service department just learning a new motor, kinda of like what your taking about Don, but more on the service floor level, rather than management. If Dodge would have stayed with the 5.0 Cummins, there would have been a better effort to figure out the new motor issues. Not that they don't exsist, I have not personaly heard of any issues, and I make it a point to talk to owners of the 5.0 CTD. That motor still may be around in another application in the future.
