Ok, decided to change the fuel filter today, and after emptying the canister and cleaning, just before I insert the new filter, usually bump the starter and let the canister fill up with diesel fuel. Ok, I bump the starter, run back to look and what, no diesel filling the canister and I hear the pump running. I try it once more and no fuel. . Suspect the lift pump has gone bad. Oh, here it is new years eve on a Sunday, what to do now? I find Autozone open, and get a pump from another store that has one. I think it says Airtex someplace on the literature, is this a good pump? My first attempt at replacing one, and right away see my 2001. 5 has the filter canister in the way of reaching the front banjo. I seen another thread where someone unbolted theirs, so I may give that a try. I dont know about doing this all in 30-45 minutes though. I have a fuel pressure ga on it, but has not been working for some time, it's pegged at 15psi, I know thats not right especially when shut off. Ok, time to get to work. I'll check back later. 87,600 miles on it. Maybe I need to check into one of those frame mount conversions??

Well It took me about 2 1/2 hours but got it changed out. Spent most of the time trying to get the Front banjo bolt in with the hose having to point upwards, (That darn bracket with a protruding guard for the hose, WHAT FOR? Next time I'm taking a sawzall to that thing. ) not much room during reassembly. 2001 2500 4wd, . . Initially, removing filter again and bump the starter and pump does not run. I Remember the pigtail supplied with the pump and it says some need this. The connectors looked the same, but what the heck, I managed to reach around and install the pigtail instead of connector direct into pump. Bump starter and fuel fills canister. Install filter, torque cap to 25 ft/lb, bump starter 2 more times and let pump cycle, then start truck. It cranks up hesitates once then kicks in and runs 5 min before I shut her down. Now I can probably do this in 45 minutes. I take the old pump apart, removing plate on top and then a gasket and then a circular plate lifts out below. See the sliding vanes in there and wonder just what wears out? I dont see any reason it shouldnt work. Maybe clearances are not as tight as they were. Got the pressure ga working again and see about 13 psi on it. Well it worked out ok, thanks to having read some posts by others on the TDR.

The first lift pump is always the hardest. My first one was 45 minutes. It's just one of those things you're gonna get good at, if you keep the truck.

I relocated my pump and used the Vulcan line kit to get rid of the banjo's. Now a replacement will require 1 screwdriver, 1 7/16 wrench, a small clamp or vice grips to close the fuel hose and about 5 minutes to change the pump. pressure is ~15 psi at idle and ~14 at full throttle.
