Does anyone keep track of there mileage on a 3500 dump truck? A friend of mine has a 2002 HO 6 speed 4x4 3:55s and a 8 foot box ( tapered bulkhead). his mileage went from 16 mpg when it was new to 10 mpg at 13000 miles. Its been to the dealer twice for this problem. First time they replaced the map sensor. The second time the boost sensor was replaced. the truck has more power now and pulls much harder but it did nothing for the mileage. When he pulls a load or hauls he`s down to 8 mpgs. Also on my 2001 2500 4x4 HO 6 speed, I am only getting 14mpg (average) running empty. not really happy with the mileage compared to my 1989 that got 23 mpgs when I first started driving it in 1990. does anybody have any ideas about whats going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been reading the Forum questions but have never asked a question before - this has been stumping us - so I thought I`d see what everyone else has to say.

Sounds normal........

A lot of people on this board hype their mileage. With that heavy of a truck and 4X to boot 10 MPG doesn't sound that far off. I can't believe he got 16 new. On my 01 with the utility bed I got 10. 5 from the start. After a few modifications I am now up to 12 on average. The EZ boxes have had good mileage effects on heavier trucks. He may gain 1-2 MPG with that mod and enjoy the extra power too.

On your truck 14 doesn't sound all that low either. It's 4X and with winter fuel and your driving style it could be about right. Our 02 gets 15. 5 on average and has gained about 1 since adding the 275 injectors.

All our driving is town freeway mix and neither truck is driven for mileage... ...

I have a 2001. 5 HO 6 speed 4X4 with 49K. My milage slowly increased from 13 mpg when new to 18-19mpg (summer, highway miles) after 25,000 miles. In the Winter I get 15-17 depending on wind, snow, hills, etc. Since you have an auto your Winter milage sounds reasonable. As far as your friend's truck is concerned have him check the clamps on the tubrocharger/intercooler/intake system.

Thanks for the feedback. My friend won`t be worrying about his mileage much longer, he just ordered a new 03. As far as my 01 its going to the dearler on the 16th. This weekend on a trip up north my mileage dropped to 10mpg and is lacking power. Hope they can tell me some good news when I pick it up.
