Howdy, just hoined TDR after lurking for about a month. I recently bought my first Cummins (see sig. and photo) Also, check out:

http://www.cachelin.freeservers.com/photo2.html for better photos. It was a real score with only 55k on the clock!

So far I have ordered a 16cm housing from Piers and plan to get a K&N, 2. 5" Skyjacker springs, and the JRE 3" exhaust. Probagbly advance the timing to 1. 4 and turn the screw up a turn to boot. And then of course somewhere down the line when the orig. pump gives out I'll get the 230hp pump and some high flow injectors... bombs away:D .

Looking forward to contributing and learning lots here! I already have in the month I have been browsing posts!

Only two questions so far:

Where can I find instructions for setting the timing (I ordered the shop manual, perhaps this will help?)

Has anyone figured out a bench seat swap in to replace the jump seats in the rear? Trying to find something more comfortable for the boys.

Lastly, my $20 for Power Wagon is on it's way. I can tell he has made a real contribution here.

Also, my old truck (very nice 77 W200) is for sale if anyone is interested... . See website as well

Thanks. Ken

Boy, thats a beauty!!!

Nice set of wheels, wow, looks in good shape!!

Welcome aboard, geeze where are all ya comin from??? LOL

Great to have more of the first genners around... .

J-eh

(edit) I was also gonna look for a bench for the back of mine. There is a company in British Columbia, Canada that makes a kit for the back of our rigs. I'm just gonna have to search for the post.

welcome!

(I'm just as new as you! LOL!)

I too have been lurking off and on for quite some time, and finally got my first Cummins... it ain't pretty, but it's MINE! :D

do these 1st gen trucks not come with 3" exhaust??? mine's got a full 3" all the way...

if yours has 3" pipe all the way from turbo to tip, I would save your money on the catback... just get a nice muffler to replace the stocker... that's where the restriction is... something like a welded dynomax race magnum or other straight through muffler will work well... you may want to use a dynomax bullet on the tip to kill any residual "bite" to the exhaust note...

I on the other hand quickly removed the Turbo Shop muffler that was on the truck and replaced it with a length of straight pipe! :D

I am planning on putting a bullet at the end of the exhaust to get rid of a little of the snap...

didn't notice any difference...

you're better off spending your exhaust efforts on the downpipe than at the rear... the gas coming out of the turbo is swirling and it swirls around down the pipe... straight flowing fluid (gas) moves MUCH faster than swirling fluid... so you need a larger diameter pipe there to make room for the fresh stuff coming out of the turbo...

I mess with a lot of turbo/gas combos (part of my lust to own a turbo diesel!) and we'll generally run a larger downpipe than tailpipe... like a 3" downpipe and a 2. 5" tailpipe or 3. 5" downpipe and 3" tailpipe... the theory is that the exhaust has straightened out and doesn't require the larger diameter and it has also cooled a little and is a little more dense (also requiring less diameter)

not trying to talk you out of Ted's product, just trying to help free up some BOMBing funds by only spending as much as necessary to get the job done! :)

Forest:

Hey thanks for the welcome. I saw your first post go up about a half hour before mine - it fact it kind of kicked me in the rear to go ahead and jump in. Likewise welcome!

Yeah the stock exhaust on mine is 3" but here are some really bad factory squashed sections going around the t-case and over the rear axle. The JRE exhaust is supposed to be "high flow" - all mandrel bends, high flow muffler, etc. However your point is well taken and I am still trying to decide what to do in that regard. Keeping the factory exhaust and straight piping it or adding a better muffler would definitely help and may be all I need until I go to a higher level of performance with the 230hp pump in the future. Any thoughts on this? I didn't mention it before but the first thing out of the gate is going to be a good set of gauges...

Lil' Dog:

Let me know if you dig up the name of that outfit in BC. I did a search of the posts and didn't find much. If it is in Vancouver it is only about a 2 hour runner from my house over the Border. I may be heading up there for tires as well - great deals compared to local prices here in the U. S. I also wanted to check out Piers Diesel which is just outside of Vancouver...

Thanks Guys, Ken

First of all ... . WELCOME !!!

I'm glad to see some more 1st Gen guys!

RE: the seats. . I got some aftermarket seats for my 93. The set-up included a 'small' bench for the rear. It is full width but obviously not full depth due to space. It uses a seperate back rest 'pad' that is velcro attached to rear bulkhead. (the only part I did not like)

The company that I got mine from was:

Pacific Coast Van & R. V. LTD.

Interiors and Accessories

P. O. Box #98 Vedder Road, Sardis BC, V@r 1A5

Ph# 604-858-4988

The make/model of seat is:

Kurt Lynn Industries LTD (You may want to look them up directly, I don't know if they are in BC or not)

It shows on the invoice as: U. T. S. Landmark Truck Seat, Starlight #116 Rose-$1,095. 00 Can. and Rear Bench w/seatbelts $500. 00 Can.

Total bill came to #1,731. 25 Canadian in 1993

Lifetime Warranty on wood frame construction,

Ten year on metal components and frames,

Five year on spring construction, manual slide mechanisms, and slide tracks,

One year on all other materials.

To tell the truth I had to do this cause I couldn't reach the dern peddles with the stock bench seat. :p

Hope that helps.

Regards, Bob

Hey thanks Bushwkr for the lead on the rear seat and all of you guys for the warm welcome. I am having a great time on TDR site already :p

Ken

hello kmc. nice looking truck. mine is also all black w/visor and a canopy. i'll look for you next time i'm down in your part of town. if you see a guy making a fool of himself--that's me!!

ahhhhh I see... didn't make the 4wd connection, sorry... yeah, I've heard they have some pretty nasty bends around the T-case...

I'm wondering if my truck has an aftermarket exhaust on it because the tailpipe is all mandrel bends... but it's 3", and the pipes are mild and the muffler was stainless... I thought the exhaust was factory save for the muffler...

anyhow, yes, fix the tight bends... with the highest priority being the ones around the t-case!

Forrest

Welcome

Beautiful truck! :D

I had hoped to find a black one (always had black trucks) but later was happy just to find a truck with the combination of equipment I wanted.

See ya 'round here.

Hey Forrest!

Check with a Walker Catalogue if you have access to one. I understand from some of the "Diesel Higher Up's" that Walker offers 3" mandrel bent exhaust parts directly from them if you have the P/N's.

Just a thought...

KEENO

I looked into this as well. They have the catalog online at www.walkerexhaust.com under Products. You can get the parts through Summit Racing for very reasonable prices... . I read on past post that the over the rear axle section is an improvement but the t-case pipe is no better than stock. A guy could have a local shop build that piece and get the Walker stuff for the rest of the system and still have good exhaust at a great price.

Ken

SQU-WASHED...

Hey Forrest!

The OEM 'over the axle' tailpipe is crushed to almost 1/2 its original diameter. If your's is mandrel bent... . its been replaced! COOL! :) Think about tossing on a Walker #21468 3" straight-thru perferated core muffler and enjoy the music! :D

Great website KMC!

KEENO:D

Thanks Keeno! :) I was looking for that Walker part number and could not find it. The web site catalog only lists the OEM offset muffler for our application. How do these mufflers compare to the Dynomax race stright through mufler of similar dimensions? I think I will have a shop fab the t-case pipe and buy the rest of the Walker stuff. That should open up the exhaust real nice for under $150 for sure. Which in turn will save $$ for something else. Does anyone make a 3. 5" downpipe or is that a custom jobber as well?

Re the web site. Once the 77 sells I will shift focus to the new truck and post pics of various stages of improvement.
