ANOTHER NV5600 oil question!

Changed my transmission oil yeaterday. Since I was installing Geno's transmission oil filter where the PTO cover goes on the passenger side, I drained the old oil out there. With 16,000 miles(mostly towing a light TT), the oil looked like new. Probably could have waited until 30k miles. I installed the filter & refilled the transmission with Pennzoil Synchromesh. To my surprise, it only took 4 qts to fill it to the bottom of the fill hole on the drivers side. I'm sure I read in the TDR mag that it would take 5. 2 qts with 8 oz going to fill the new filter. I took it for a drive and rechecked the oil level while on level ground. It was full up to the bottom of the fill hole.



Is 4 qts all that it takes?



I noticed on the test drive that the transmission seemed to shift easier and smoother. I could not find the reported magnet on the bottom but I was very impressed at the size of the two gears I could see.

Where did you drain the oil from?

Dieselram: From the passenger side PTO hole. There are covers over the PTO holes on the front of both sides of the transmission. Removing the bottom bolt on either cover drains the oil. But in my case, I removed the entire cover and replaced it with the oil filter from Geno's.

Sounds like you did it right to me. I changed out the PTO plates for FAST coolers on mine, so it now takes 7 qts to fill. I don't use the factory location, but the top hole on the cooler. I did verify the level with the factory plug when I installed the coolers however... service manual states 9 pints if memory serves, so there may have been some residual in your transmission. Did you do your change on level ground? That's the only thing I could think of.

I used the filter from quad4x4 and used almost 5 quarts not sure if the filters the same as the one from genos. I was told it would take 9. 5 pints with the filter i used. I think that is a little more than the 8 oz. additional called for on the genos filter. That was the first time for me, had Auto's in the past. like the NV5600 better. might want to run it a few miles and check it again? must be pretty dang close I would think.

Just changed mine today. I used 4 1/3 qts but couldn't testify as to the exact levelness

of the truck.



The magnet is located inside the left PTO cover about a finger length in from the side, just

behind the big gear. It is a flexible vinyl-like material about 1 1/2" square and about 1/16" thk.



I would have to look again but I think the rear of the transmission is a little low so maybe

there is a puddle that isn't draining. Also I am not sure but what the 9 1/2 pints is for a

dry transmission?

I just changed mine at 15k and added the filter from Geno's. It took almost 5 quarts to the bottom of the fill hole.

Just changed every fluid in my truck today, only took 3. 5 quarts to refill the transmission I got a little nervous when I discovered an extra bottle of Syncromesh, so I double checked the service manual ... ..... 9. 5 pints, not the 7 that it took.



On a side note, that skid plate sure makes a terrible mess changing the t-case fluid

Changed mine last week @ 47k, fluid looked good, no burnt smell & I pull tt's & 5'vers for a living. Took just over 4 qts.
