i am in NE Iowa and it gets cold here and i know what you mean by smoking up the garage.
based on the 10 up to 1 minute i would suggest the fluid is slightly low,

we don't get good cooler flo and pressure and good mainline pressure on the dyno unless the fluid is at the correct levels.

1/2 to 1 qt low on fluid is a major cause of no movement cold for 15-30 seconds on a thm350 trans in chevy and gmc pickups since new (67 or 68) and the cause is the dipsticks dont register correctly and the filter being bolted directly to the valve body are in the high part of the pan.
a thm 400 with deep pan where the filter is located within 1/2 inch of bottom does not have these problems.

if more fluid does not correct it and you may try backing in the garage if it goes into forward better. if it is low fluid it should cure both reverse and forward. but just backing in may get a little smoky.

don't want to get long winded so if anyone has any transmissons with modulators instead of tv cables email me and i will fill you in on cold weather problems on thoes trannies.

I live in Fairbanks Alaska, I believe this qualifies as cold weather. I have had the BD Valve body installed for two complete winters and this is my third. To date I start the vehicle, get oil pressure, then shift into gear (usually reverse) and it takes about 5 to 10 seconds and it moves just fine.

Try putting the truck in Nuetral. the converter in my cuda started wearing out and draining back overnite. Call turbo action and they said it was getting worn out(has had the hell driven out of it anyways) and to put it in nuetral after you start it. When i did that i could back up in no time at all. Then the snout broke off about a week later(don't worry. . very common 904 problem) Good luck #ad

I had the one way valve removed when I got my new TC/VB because I was told that some have problems with this valve sticking and toasting the trans. The valve did show signs of it sticking. I start mine and let oil pressure build up and I'm on my way. I've had no problems at all.
