I saw the post by Mobuis1, but I have a different problem. Tonight I attempted to adjust my parking brakes. I could get the Right Rear adjuster, but I tried 4 different brake spoons, two screw drivers and I can't get to the Left Rear parking brake adjuster. #@$%!

Just how did you get to yours to adjust it?

I know some people have modified a brake adjustment tool or screwdriver. Some people have adjusted it with the rotor off, and then test, then re-adjusted etc...

I sure hope someone comes up with an answer. Inquiring minds need to know.

I'd hate to have to pay my local Dodge Guys to adjust my parking brakes.

We ended up heating a big screw driver and bending it... . making a special tool to do this...

I wrote in the other thread that we don't use the parking brake in the winter... for us its too easy for water to get trapped in the cable and freeze, thus you release the brake from in the cab but the frozen cable prevents the shoes from retracting and will cause excessive wear... .

So my guys were all trained to leave the truck in gear and needed park the truck against a curb in case it rolls...

We do a brake inspection once a year during the annual inspection of the truck (DOT's) and at that time we pull the rotor and inspect... if necessary we'd adjust it at that time... its simpler to set a big set of calipers to the size of the drum, and than measure the shoes, and adjust so your not installing and taking off the rotor.....

Years ago all good drum brake mechanics had one of these in his tool box so that he could pre-adjust the brakes when doing a brake job, thus saving that step later...

jelag,

Learnd not to use the parking brake in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Darn things would freeze to the drum.

Any possibility you could post a photo of that bent screwdriver?

I gave up on an adjusting tool and just pull the rotors off, adjust and put back on. So much easier! I adjusted them for a slight amount of drag, just like adjusting drum brakes.

Thnaks for the reply. I think that's what I'm going to do. The same guy that designed the parking brake must have done some of the design work on the F-4 Phantom.

Thanks again.
