Im new here at TDR , but I havent as of yet read about any one checking a bad quick connect O ring fitting at the lift pump feed which would certainly cause radical running and radical gauge readings. All you need is a small stream of air going into the pump and the pressures will be all over the map! The VW TDI I have has a 3 peice fuel line with quick connectors and it is a common problem to get air in the lines when the fuel tank check valve is sticking. Before the winter sets in I think I will put a threaded port banjo on the lift pump inlet side with a solid bushing (instead of the fuel line fitting) and put a barb in the end of the banjo so I can hard plump the fuel line with a couple of clamps instead of that quick connect. With the hard winters we have been haveing lately in NY, I don't trust a (somewhat loose) single RUBBER O-Ring to maintain a good elastic seal in below 0 air and possibly thicker fuel to boot! ... . Now I wonder about the other end of the line ?

I think it would depend on how bad the leak is. It may only pass air at WOT when pump vacumm is greatest. Reading post after post of "bad" relatively new pumps is just hard to take. Personaly I would hard plumb the feed line before I spend the cash to replace a pump with jumpy pressure first.

2 cents
