Someone talk to me about Castrol RX 15W-40...

How to set the idle?

Yesterday I installed the TAG that I purchased from Diesel Power Products (Dave Meheen). My impression after a day of driving the truck around (freeway and town driving) is GREAT. I must admit that when installing this TAG unit, I thought how is this small thing really going to help me and how can it be worth $129. The truck does seem snappier and a quicker throttle response. BUT the real quencher is the muffled sound of the turbo. I have the Scotty II and the sound of the turbo is not near as bad as without the TAG. My wife says that we don't need to run the Scotty in the "hush" mode anymore. I'll keep the TAG.

:) , Harold, if you haven't already, you can now add more fuel now with less smoke off idle.

That is if you wanted more fuel.

You do want more fuel don't you?:D :D

more on TAG

My wife gave me a TAG for Christmas. Drove to Amarillo (360 miles) for

the family get together. Trip up AT was in the 50s, @ 75 mph (on flat) EGT

was about 575, mpg 20. 7

4 days later, TAG gets installed, AT in the 30s, @ 75 mph (on flat) EGT

was about 550, mpg 20. 6, mpg drop from playing :D. EGT drop, AT diff.

I have seen all of the previously posted positives,

Quicker spool/throttle response. Smoother acceleration. The stutter/turbo lag

from 2nd-3rd & 3rd-4th is less noticeable. Less in-cab noise, wife commented

that it was quieter. So when we got home I slapped on a fresh BHAF

(NAPA 2790), and took off the silencer ring, turbo sings good, but the jury

is still out on whether it stays gone.

I am working on the second tank of fuel. Just started back to work this

week, will have to refuel the 8th or 9th and I will post mpg for city/highway

driving. I don't expect anything out of the ordinary.

I second moparguy from https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=84635&highlight=tag

... I do like the benefits the TAG unit

has provided. The improvements I've observed can be

compared to a smoothing of rough edges kind of

enhancement rather than a major grab you by the

neck and set you back in the seat upgrade.

I agree with moparguy, but I think a quantitative advantage arrives when towing. I just don,t know how to measure it.

TAG rocks

I've been running a TAG now for about 5 months in my PDR HX40 (see sig for other mods). For me, it greatly reduces (muffles) the turbo whine, increases mpg by about 1. 5-2mpg empty, reduces EGT's, increases spoolup, and reduces smoke. This past Wednesday I towed 12K of livestock through some pretty steep grades and EGT's didn't get over 1100°F with all 4 of Eric Buckel's winter fronts on with ambient temp @ 40°F

It's not a set of 100hp injectors, but it will deliver a nice SOP increase and it is a high quality part

I have a KSB1B. Dave Meehan machined a cut for a silencer, shortened the nose of the B1 about 1/4" I think he said and a TAG that fits the slot in the OEM air intake duct.

I like it.

Softens the Scotty II with cowl hole cut by about 50%. Spool below 4# is better (faster) turbine noise over 8# is almost nonexistent. Spool up was faster. Driving in town 35 mph I do not ever recall 1# of boost. Boost seems to be about 1# less than without it. In town below 30 mph I can not even hear the turbine.

Did a couple of standing stop to 65 mph. No hesitation at all form 1# to 25#. In idle (800 rpm) before it would cycle from 775 - 800 slowly. With it the idle is a very steady 775 rpm.

I would generally say not a silver bullet, but no one thing is going to do everything. It definitely contributes to smoother, even power acceleration.

I did a onramp to interstate and was a very easy 30 - 85 mph accereration. I will pull my 13k RV in 2 weeks and will see how that goes.

I definitely think it is well worth the $129 one time buy.

Gets my vote.

Pulled the 5er. VERY smooth acceleration. Scotty II is VERY quiet, have to listen for it with the windows up. Windows down you don't hear the turbine.

Windows up and radio on you can barely hear the turbine.

Took a ride with the wife. She likes the difference, "we can carry on a conversation now", which may be good or bad, lol.

General boost # is down 1# under all conditions, I think that should mean more efficient power production.

The TAG fits the OEM intake hose very well into a little indention already in the inner hose form. I measured the distance from the TAG ring to the end of the hose where the clamp is, marked the turbine inlet cone thta distance so I know the TAG is fully into the turbine inlet and seated, and put the air duct back on.

The combination of the Scotty II (with cowl hole cut), KSB1B, TAG, and silencer is a perfect combination to get air into the turbine with minimal turbine whine in the cab. I have not done any attempts at using a noise silencing material in the cowl rain trough by the windshield. If you did that I think the last little bit of the turbine noise would be eliminated.

The TAG is a good product and does what it says, straightens the air flow.
