Changing the oil and the fuel filter on the wife's truck today. Did my customary inspection of the throttle cable and  it's starting to fray. I just got done replacing the one on my truck a couple of months back on it was a muther to do. I sent the old cable and ticket in to DC, who called me back to tell me there is no recall on the throttle cables  So much for that. Now, I have to have the truck for this weekend and my wife has to use it during the week. I'll have to get a shop (not dealership) to fix it for me, as I won't have the time. Man, these little things like this are one of the things that's aggravating about these trucks. Here we have a known problem with a faulty design but we're stuck with it. I wouldn't even mind replacing the throttle cable, but for Pete's sake why didn't they put the same kind of connector on the end of the new design cable so we wouldn't have to change that stupid bell crank lever?! Sorry. Rant session over.

First off. . NO apoligies needed! and NOT a rant session... just good heads-up info for our 12 valve brothers!

Just to add. . I lube spray with TEK automatic weapons oil/preserve all linkage/joints/pivots at oil/filter change(4 times a year).

Keep on posting.

Best to you all

The throtle cable was a recall I saw it on CNN and also autobytel.com notified me to the recall. I havnt gotten around to sending my bill to DM for refund but will look up recall info soon. My cable No. 1 frayed and local chrysler dodge replaced it. You might try autobytel.com.

Throttle cable

Danandme, in the July 2001 issue of Trailer Life, page 81 under recall states:

"DaimlerChrysler is recalling 157,000 (1994-96) Dodge Ram pickups with diesel engines. On certain pickup trucks, the throttle cable could unravel (fray) or break, resulting in a loss of throttle control. Dealers will inspect and replace the throttle cable and upper bell crank lever. NHTSA Recall No. 01V037/DaimlerChrysler Recall No. 970"

Hope this helps...

That cable is somewhat embarrasing to have on such fine powerplant as the Cummins. How much $$ could Dodge possibly be saving on such a wimpy part? Certainly is DIFFERENT...

FYI, on my LOWLY 1991 Toy p/u the throttle cable is AT LEAST TWICE AS THICK & has hugely stout ends.

It still looks brand new after 180,000 miles--Imagine that!

Donley, I found the recall in my trailer life, you're right. Now, here's how bad things have gotten with Diamler running the show. When I replaced my first one back in March on my truck, I already knew about the recall via this site. As I mentioned earlier, the people at Diamler customer service hadn't been informed about anything. Now that the one on my wife's truck is going out, here it is June, the info is even in trailer life and I called two different Dodge dealerships that we use through the store and neither one of them has been notified by Diamler about it yet. So here's what I came down with and yes, I told this to one of the Dodge parts guys over the phone, who laughed and agreed with me. I can get the cable pretty cheap through the store. By the time I took off work, drove 80 miles to the nearest dealership, waited around for them to get it fixed, drive back home, fix everything the dopehead losers  in the service department screwup under the hood while they're there, I would be better off to just pay for the part and fight with Diamler over a refund.

Mike, the cable is a joke, that's for sure. The replacement is ok and if they would have put the same size end on it as the old one, it would be about a 10 minute job, no sweat  Oh well, just the price we pay, I guess.

I'm no rocket scientist but I'm thinking it shouldn't be too hard to get one's hands on some heavier gauge aircraft cable (for the flexibility) and drill out the stock ends and silver-solder them onto the new, heavier cable. Even a step or two heavier should work wonders and still fit into the original housing. Waddaya think?

Only annoyance is having to do the de-bugging for a company as big as D/C, but if it gets us down the road... Why not!

Frank, I thought automatic weapons lube has been been banned in Rhode Island?:D

Got to check mine. I'm still on the factory one!

A new record!

After having heck with the first one I did on my truck, I knocked the one on my wife's truck out tonite from start to finish in an hour and a half  I'm really glad I didn't fool with the dealer, now. What a difference learning a few tricks the first time by trial and error makes. If any of you Texas rammers don't want to fool with the dealer and need a hand puting one in, give me a holler.

As I recall about the recall, seeing on the news and the news paper was that the cable and somthing else would corrode because of salt (from the road). So maybe if the truck was bought in the suny south they did not include them.

Which wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. Dodge had to sell more than 157,000 since mid 93 thru 96.

I been waiting for a recall notice but I think I have new version anyway.

THROTTLE CABLE

wENT TO THE dc TODAY TO INVESTIGATE THE THROTTLE CABLE RECALL, THEY RAN THE VIN # AND IT CAME BACK THAT MY TRK WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RECALL. Are they just pulling my leg or are they telling me the truth?
