Like this ? hasn't been asked a billion times. Going to have City Diesel in Knoxville advance timing first week in Jan. What is a safe increase to go to with H20/Meth. Was thinking between 16-18. Don't tow. Drag race a little. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Have already searched the different threads on timing, still don't really know what timing to go with.

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

Know problems with them giving increased timing, this shop is horsepower friendly :-laf . I think I will go with 18. Just hope the HG will hold.

I'm going to get the timing upped to 18 when I get the head o-ringed and put studs in. But got to get some more money saved up first.

They charged $75, really a good shop. They're reputable in my book. I have had pump work done their before on my old 95 and am going to have the pump on my current truck put on the bench probably next month. I asked them and they said they do the pump work for Keating Machine, since they are in the same area. But that is what they said, don't know for sure. But to me that is all the credibility they need if it's true.

Wow! Thats a bargain according to this shops estimate! It was $185 or 189. I just ordered the tools last week. Have several buddies that want it done, they are going to chip in so we will be able to move again in the future. What did you set yours at for now? 16?

Yep, 16. Like I said though I will be going higher in the near future. I thought the price was good. Was going to buy a timing kit, but thought since it was cheaper, that I would let a shop that has done it before go on ahead and do it.

Max safe timing 17 deg?

Ryan, you said you went to 16 degrees and maybe more in the future. What is the max that the BOMERS are running without the o-ringed head? Is 5. 1mm approx 17 degrees ok? I just went through the KDP nightmare after replacing the cam and housing... . re-checked the timing and get 5. 1mm, I am a little worried and wonder if I should back it down a little.

Let me suggest to anyone who has not killed their KDP do it now. R&R ing the cam and housing is a PITA and I only dropped one lifter in the oil pan.

If you have the 180 pump 5. 1 mm should be dead on. As far as safety goes for not blowing your HG, that'll depend on how you drive it, how much fuel, and future plans. If you let it warm up good before really hammering on it I would think 17 to be ok with your current setup, but I'm definitely no expert compared to others on here. The reason I didn't go any higher now is because J. R. told me it would be more than likely that I would experience HG problems. I would ask around the site. J. R. is really good to talk to as well as others. I'm not knocking anybody else, just like J. R. 's character, I'm sure you will find otherwise if you ask enough. If you need anything else I'll try and help as much as possible.

Oh and as far as max others are running, every truck is different. But I'm a firm believer in playing it safe because this is my primary mode of transportation.
