I got a set of 3rd gen tow mirrors that are power/heat, and now need the 2nd gen tow mirros to put on my 98. my question, do you just use the mirror head from the 3rd gen mirrors, or do you use the arm too? Can you use just the mirror head from the 3rd gen on the 2nd gen to mirror arms? I found a set of 2nd gen tow mirrors that have a broken arm and was wonderin if I could use those.

thanks in advance.

I looked into this a while back and it just wasn't worth my time or money to me. But as I can remember you need the third gen head with the second gen arm. The wiring from the head should fit through the arm and connect into the stock wiring in the truck. Then you need the new controller on the heating element knob, or add some type of switch somewhere. Stock it came on the heating element control panel. Then you need the little arm control for the door to move the mirrors. It's pretty intense, I'm pretty sure klenger has a good write up on his website. www.klenger.net I think is the page.

When I did the conversion on my truck I did the split at the pivit of the arm and base. I keep the head and arm intack.

Yeah, as soon as I wrote this, I realized i was a moron. I dont think you can take the head off the arm easily. Last night I took the 3rd gen mirrors apart, and am going to use the arm/head just like Klengers instructions. I have to agree, that if you had to buy the 2nd gen mirrors and the 3rd gen mirrors new, it would be ourtrageous in price. Luckily, I found a set of cheap 2nd gen mirrors and a really cheap set of 3rd gen power/heat mirrors. Its gonna cost me less to do the conversion than a new set of nonpower/heat 2nd gen tow mirrors cost!!!

I dont know why I was confused at first, I guess just one of those moments.
