another wiring question

I have put power and ground to the wires on what i would say is my lift pump, [97 12 valve ,down below the fuel filter] and i am not geting any response. is there some type of oil pressure or injection pump suction safety switch or is my pump bad? Also the two wires are both the same color and i don't have the plug from the wiring harness so i can 't trace it, is there any way to tell power from ground or do i switch them back and forth until i get flow? thx Dana [Also on this motor where is the oil pressure sending unit?]

Well on a 12 valve the lift pump is manual, it runs off a lobe on the camshaft so what you are putting power to is probably the fuel heater or a sensor. The 12 valve lift pump only pumps fuel when the engine is turning. 24 valve endines have the electric lift pump. 12 Valve lift pumps do not seem to have near the problems as the later ones... ... . I think the fuel heater is on the bottom of the fuelfilter/ water separater,there are two wires coming off it. but there are wires attached to the fuel pump, there is a plug with two wires which split off and go to two places on the pump. I need to know what this is as i am trying to make up the wireing at this moment . please help thx Dana
