we have been having a bunch of ice and snow around here lately, so pulling my trailer I have had my share of sliding to a stop usually when driving slowly approaching a stop sign. I have noticed when I press down really hard and the anti lock kicks in its almost as if the brakes turn off!! whereas if I control with my foot and add brake pressure slowly I can stop the truck much faster when I don't allow the truck to go into anit lock up mode, I also don't like the rough feedback you recieve through the pedal along with the noise, it seems as if all cars come equipped with the same feature and the way it works is the same, I drove a lumina back in the early 90's that had the anitlock feature and it worked great and would accutally stop the vehicle faster than I could on slick surfaces. to be honest I think I would be far better off without the anit lock brake feature on my truck, I have enough disicipline in my driving ablities to control this myself so my question is have others noticed this and is there a way to defeat the feature??

This has been discussed in the past a lot. On VERY slick surfaces antilock hurts more then it helps for obvisous reasons. You can for a temporary measure pull the anitlock fuse and have normal braking. Do a search. Should be lots of reading on the subject.

I respectfully disagree. My anti-lock brakes slow me much faster than doing it manually. I love it. I have a junker toyota car that I drive to work that does not have ABS and the difference is night and day. I prefer to drive the truck in snow and ice just because I can brake much better in the truck because of the ABS.

My wife's 2000 Durango SLT+ doesn't have 4 wheel anti-lock brakes. Every other vehicle I own (including my motorcycle!) does have anti-lock on all wheels. I got my first driver's license in 1961, so most of the vehicles I've owned have not had the benefit of anti-lock brakes. After living 22 years in central Ohio (snow & ice) between stints back home on the Texas Gulf Coast (rain), I'm an absolute believer in anti-lock brakes! They've saved my bacon more than once!!
