Just got done helping Boondock swap out his rear end in his '98 12v due to a bent housing. The replacement rear end came out of a '96. The speed sensor is not the same between the '98 and the '96. Then connector is different. Does anyone happen to know if we can just cut n splice the wires from the '98 to the sensor off the '96 axle? They both are only 2 wires, but the '96 is a red and black wire, and the '98 is a red and a white/purple wire. We can't just pull the sensor and put the other one in because of some tabs on top of the housing of the '96 axle, won't allow the sensor from the '98 to fit in there.

Right now the truck is up and running, but without ABS. The sensor is unplugged. The ABS and BRAKE light are both on.

Thanks... .

I'm actually going threw this myself. I put a 97 into my 98. does your 96 have the connector on the sensor at 90 degrees, and the sensor on the rearend needs a straight connector because of the tabs? I think I'm going to cut the 1 tab off so that way I can still use the sensor that goes with the truck. I went threw my dealers whole selection of sending units and wiring kits to try to adapt it over. I came up with nothing! I suppose if you you did have the connector off of the truck, that you should be able to splice it in.

We actually have the connector for the '96 as well, which is why I asked about just splicing it together.

The '96 comes out of the pumpkin and straight forward, with a cast tab on either side of the sensor, preventing the '98 sensor from going in there. The '98 comes out of the pumpkin, and goes out towards the drivers side rear tire. The '98 also has 2 square connections, and the '96 has 2 round. I thought of just grinding the tab off, but wasn't sure if I should or not.

yep, that is the same as mine. I would go ahead and try to splice on the differant plug. If it don't work you can change it back, then cut the tab off and use the old sensor. I really don't see any harm in cutting that tab off. Good luck!

Just got done with that last weekend. I went from a 98 Dana 70 to a 96 Dana 80..... I cut the metal tab off my Dana 80 with a saw-zaw. Got the replacement sensor from Dodge for $30 i think. It came with an adaptor wire that splices the two different connectors together... ... ... . only trbl now is the ABS enguages evrytime at low speed. Something not right there, its starting to get real annoying in traffic jams. It seems to enguage everytime I'm rolling at 3-5mph. and apply the brakes... . If i come up to a normal stop, everything operates normally and ABS dosent enguage. Any idae on what would cause this?
