Yesterday I was checking the oil and noticed a residue on the oil filler cap and inside the tube that looked like antifreeze. The antifreeze level was also low on the overflow can so I filled it back up. Any ideas on how its getting in there? There are no noticeable external leaks and the oil on the dipstick looks clean. Somebody told me it could be synthetic oil residue, but it looks too green to me. The truck runs and starts fine. Any guesses?

I hope you're sitting down... that's a very significant sign that you need a head gasket or worse. My KW did that all THREE times that the head gasket went south. CATERPILLAR C-12's STINK!

If you have any doubt about wether or not you are leaking antifreeze into the crankcase, send in an oil sample for analysis.

Sending an oil sample off for analysis is definitely a good thing to try, but fyi, I was experiencing the same residue with mine and it turned out to be too much short tripping and the type of oil the dealership that was servicing my engine was using. I switched to mobil 5w40 synthetic and no more of that residue.
